STEEL. MOTHERFUCKING. BATTALION. (not the shitty 360 one)
General | Posted 13 years agoi have just come into possession of the legendary holy grail of gaming controllers: the steel battalion 'VT' controller.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel_Battalion
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped.....ontrollers.jpg
needless to say, i will be playing much steel battalion soon, but i also have plans for this controller!
the 'best' windows driver for this device is apparently only for windows XP 32 bit. and while i do have winXPx32 in dualboot, i have already managed to make windows 7x64 see the device, and respond to input. if reconfiguration proves too difficult, i will use my winXP boot to play games with it.
i plan on playing the following:
World of Tanks
Mechwarrior online
Hawken
MAME?
anything else badass enough to deserve this controller. >:D (suggestions welcome)

Second life and how it has changed over the years
General | Posted 13 years agostarting with the TL:DR: SL used to have bad graphics and good people, now it seems to have good graphics and bad people. i want good people to come back.
i've been in SL longer than most furries can say they have been. when i joined SL, the Torus primitive was new. Lusk was the only furry area. The Forest opened as a furry sim shortly after. and then a booth at anthrocon 2005 propelled the fandom into SL, at least, those willing to put up with the graphics engine which at the time was nearly impossible to make anything that looked good.
since then, we have seen upgrades, changes, alterations, and changes. some for the better, some for the worse. and i dont just mean the program, viewer, and engine. the social structure and community has been similarly changed.
The Beginning of furry in SL: in this time, you were required to pay 10$USD to join SL and have an account. at first, only the creative joined SL. i mean, it had little to no content! it was a playground for building and creating, and for those creative people to socialize as they created their world around them. these were great times for the community, the users able to interact daily with the Lindens, and get a feel for things. i made a lot of great friends in that time, a few of which are very dear to me.
the mainstream: the SL userbase exploded in numbers in june of 2005. SL eventually dropped its 10$ entrance fee, and at almost the exact same time as another noteworthy event. Anthrocon 2005. there was a booth there showcasing SecondLife as a social engine where anthro's were allowed and welcomed openly. and on top of that, the open ended content had many implications from creative, social, and (let's face it,) sexual standpoints. at this time, it was still limited in graphics, but people were learning ways to make things that looked passable, and even had a few games within the engine that were rather addicting, if not too laggy. :P at this time, a mix of the still technically adept creative userbase, and the technically inept user who still liked the idea of such a game were joining up en masse. this was one of the best times for SL. it was becoming popular, and growing very well.
the sculpted prim
this was a radical improvement to graphics in SL. but at the same time, it made building a little harder for people who had little rendering experience outside of the built in SL engine. slowly this brought about less and less unique avatars in the userbase, and more purchased avatars with personal touches added like piercings, clothes, and glowsticks, etc. i first noticed this when "best avatar" contests in clubs stopped focusing on the coolest looking custom avatar, but was often won by whoever was the first to find and buy a new avatar from a vendor before the mainstream caught wind of it. as this happened more and more, people began to collect avatars made by vendors, and even some would abandon their own originality, and make their fursona, both on and off of SL into the character they had in SL. early examples of this are the Crux, created by Mallush Cleaver, who, when asked, stated that they hate what the crux has become. at this time, the mainstream had become a bit saturated. Trolls had always run amuck in SL, but around this time, they stopped focusing on crashing sims and attacking people, and more on causing drama within the growing communities. the furry fandom in SL was beginning it's slow decline. FA began to place rules about SL snapshots, since it turned out that so many were pictures of avatars and poses the uploader didnt even make, but somehow had the gall to claim as their own. thankfully the limits still allowed the builders and heavy-modders to showcase their efforts. around this time though, there were very mixed feelings about SL by the furry community.
introduction of Mesh
original content, and mass produced content was hard to distinguish at this point, as Sculpted prims were commonplace, and getting easier to make. despite this fact, custom content was rare. by this time, most people had avatars from one of about a dozen vendors, or used a crappy freebie. and then, Mesh hit. Mesh is a massive improvement to SL's graphics. it finally allowed people to have furry avatars that look ust how they want, imported directly from popular rendering programs like 3DS max and Maya. unfortunately i feel like this improvement is too little, too late. the furry community in SL was already on a steep decline. many of my long time friends had simply stopped using SL entirely by this time. they had grown tired of it all and just moved on to different, better things. mostly minecraft :P
Today: mesh is a little more common, but it makes it even harder to see custom content. nearly everything that looks good can be found in a vendor somewhere. content creators are somewhat few and far between now, and one must sift through the seas of idlers, trolls, the socially inept, and the jaded, just to get at one or two new friends. to me, SL has become boring and nearly pointless, where i only log in to chat a little with friends and maybe tweak my avatar a ltitle. i want to like SL, but without the enjoyment of the social aspect, my interest in it has slwoly been waning.
so, this is what SL has become. a cesspool of idlers, the socially inept, trolls, and people there just to ruin your day. the exception to this generalization tends to exist, but is hard to find, because many of them spend their time in small groups of friends, trying to keep away from those general masses who would otherwise ruin the experience.
i invite my friends to keep going to SL, and try to keep these small circles of creative and friendly people alive.
i do not mean to offend people with what i have said here. if you are offended, it means one of two things. 1: you are an exact example of what im talking about. if you dont like being such an example, then that feeling is a good indication that you want to take steps to change that so you can see yourself as a better individual. or 2: you feel like an exception to my generalizations that has gone overlooked. and i apologize for that, because i tried to give mention that there are still some good people in SL. (except for cruxes. cruxes are bad, mmmkay :P)

Public Service Announcement- Artists: stop using .jpg
General | Posted 13 years agoArtists: if you still use .jpg to save your art, you are insulting yourself by degrading the quality of your work after the fact.
PNG is better for: Illustrations, drawings, comics, and text on an image.
JPG is better for: saving screenshots or photos where detail is not necessary, or for uploads on sites where there is a small filesize limit. (below 100kb)
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/13936495/PNGvsJPG.bmp here is a sample from an image saved both in jpg and png.
i could go on for a while about this, but i want to keep it simple and straightforward, much like the convenience of both of these formats.
and remember: on FA, an image above 1280x1280 will be automatically resized and .jpg converted. so remember to either do the image change workaround, or keep it below 1280x1280

looking for a little fursuit making help
General | Posted 13 years agoi'm looking for an experienced fursuit builder to chat with. its gotta be someone who doesnt mind sharing everything they know about the process. i'm interested in learning. - a couple examples of questions i have at this stage are things like what kind of threads i will need, and if there is a particular brand or even year of sewing machine that will remain durable and consistent throughout the process- especially on a budget.
i'm fine

Selling a tabletPC
General | Posted 13 years agothis year i only have ONE tabletPC for sale. relevant specs and links are below. it is in wonderful condition. there are some signs of use, but nothing bad. it was refurbished, and has been under moderate use by me since.
i have sold this model to artists in the past. this device is particularly useful for graphic designers who cannot afford a wacom cintiq, and don't want a glorified mousepad like the bamboo for their drawing. while i owned it i had and used Photoshop CS5. it ran just fine.
the buyer is welcome to come to me with any questions about it after buying. i refurbished approx. 300 of them throughout a year working in an HP repair partner shop, and owned one for nearly two years.
specs:
Model: HP tc4400
Processor: intel core2duo t7200@2ghz
RAM: 2GB (upgradable to 4gb)
HD: 120GB HDD
graphics: intel GMA 950 (this one doesnt do much for gaming. it doesnt run TF2, and barely handles secondlife. it loves n64 emulation though =P )
Tablet: Wacom Penabled Pressure sensitive digitizer built into the reversible screen (this is a MUST for artists!)
OS: Windows XP tablet edition 32 bit. - clean install and prepared for use, with none of that OEM shovelware crap. (this is windows XP pro with added tablet features you see standard in vista/7) supports windows 7. supports 64 bit. RAM upgrade recommended for Vista or 7.
Battery: good condition. - comes with an additional external battery! a solid 6 hours battery life between the two. 4.5 under moderate stress of multimedia, 2 if running second life. :P
warranty: i cant offer a whole lot on this one. but if something goes immediately wrong in the first 30 days i'll gladly help try to get it repaired.
Price: $200 USD. i will cover shipping within the US
advanced specs and info page: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/...../12443_na.HTML
Battery, External Travel battery, Charger, and Stylus are all included, and in good condition.
i can supply the ghost image file i made upon preparing the tablet for sale, so if anything ever goes wrong with the OS or hard drive, you can do a clean install without hunting down a million drivers.
ask in comments for any other information.

ok, java should be safe again
General | Posted 13 years agojava 7 update 7 fixes the exploit i mentioned in the prior journal. it should be no more or less vulnerable than it was before this particular exploit was discovered. should be safe to re-enable it , just make sure you update to newest version.
a return to cartridges?
General | Posted 13 years agoapparently, tech companies have just unveiled TV screens capable of displaying at what they call "4K" which is 4 times higher resolution than 1080 high definition. you probably wont see these televisions on the shelves in your local best buy for another 2 or more years, but the first sets can be obtained as early as this fall, at prices set for "the one percent". the only flaw here is that the resolution is too high for even blu ray to really handle effectively. i believe this implies a new medium around the corner. possibly one of three things:
1: a new optical media that's even more powerful than blu ray.
2: the medium for this resolution will be purely digital, transferred to and stored on an SSD, flash memory, or HDD in the set. this seems impractical, as it would not be able to stream over the web, meeting the same limitation as blu ray and DVD. - and lets face it, even for quality, nobody wants to wait these days.
3: a new type of multimedia. cartridge based, each cart storing a form of SSD / Flash memory in it, similar to our beloved gaming cartridges that are still used to this day in the nintendo 3DS. or you can think of it as a security-locked SD flash drive if you will.
the third option is highly viable with SSD and non volatile flash technology becoming cheaper by the day.
its up for debate as to how easily it would be cracked for piracy. in the long run, likely not much easier or harder than ripping blu rays and DVD's, though different hardware might be required thanks to the likelihood of security through obscurity, unique patents, and proprietary hardware. despite that, the interface could even potentially be usb 3.0, allowing for a high range of compatibility with devices already out and about.
just spewing out my thoughts on the topic.

BRONIES: you are furries. stop saying you are not.
General | Posted 13 years agoThey don't have a special word for Disney fans, or StarFox fans, or Redwall fans, or Animorphs fans, or Thundercats fans, or Sly Cooper fans. Just because MLP got its own unique term for being a fan of it, does not make it any different from all the other kinds of Furries out there. To claim otherwise is just ignorant.
to specify:
NOT ALL, but SOME furries are bronies.
ALL bronies are furries.

are gamers spoiled nowadays?
General | Posted 13 years agoas i play kingdom hearts 1 (dont ask why, i never bothered to play until now) i find myself getting easily lost, and getting a little irritated about not immediately knowing where to go relative to where i am. are the minimaps, waypoints, radar, and linear gameplay of more modern titles making us gamers lazy? i used to love exploring in games, granted, the early areas in this game are somewhat repetitive, leaving the feeling of exploration not as prominent. but now, i just seem to get annoyed if i dont know what my next objective is immediately. and i'm not sure i like that.
got any thoughts?

needed: 3-d printer
General | Posted 13 years agofor the last, oh, 10 years or so theres something i have always wanted. a small trinket that looks like the Screw attack/Varia suit (depending on which metroid youre referencing) logo. in recent months, i went to great lengths to have a 3-d model built up that was compatible with a 3-d printer, and suitable for making into a small charm, with a hole for a chain to make into a necklace if desired. i had even found someone with the tools to make it happen. unfortunately, for some reason (he didnt share, i didnt pry) it turned out he was unable to do this for me. i am willing to pay for the materials and shipping, maybe even a few bucks more.
