That "I Love Yiff" icon...
General | Posted 12 years agoIt actually makes me a bit uncomfortable to have on my page. I mean, the thing is, I really do cherish sex, but... I dunno, the whole "loving yiff" phrase makes it sound like I'm much more in the free-wheeling, slutty (not in a derogatory sense), sleeps-around-with-anyone-cute crowd, which is fine for them, but so totally not for me.
I mean, I toy around a bit with that persona as far as RP goes, but in terms of real intimacy? Definitely not. I only like it with people I care for deeply and trust, and yeah, that's a lot of people (theoretically; most of them live too far away to visit), but I know them all a lot and like them as more than just friends. <3 They're all special to me. And I really don't feel that the "I Love Yiff" group reflects that.
I kind of want to start my own group, actually, but... lol, it's a lot of work, and I'm barely known around here. I can't imagine I'd get many furs joining it, and there's no good "neutral ground" to advertise it on either, except my own page. Everywhere else I post would be someone else's page, submission, or journal.
Not sure what to do about that.

ALL THE FURRIES
ALL THE FURRIES
The same as being in love [kinda emo & ranty]
General | Posted 12 years agoI talk about some transphobic comments here, so if that would ruin your day, you probably shouldn't keep reading.
Can't stop thinking of someone today. A guy I desperately wanted to be friends with: he was so nice and sweet, good artist, and just adorable. Me and my ex loved chatting with him, there was that excitement of a new friendship, even if it may not have turned out to be something super close. We would hang out in his streams and just have fun.
Then one day, he starts saying incredibly ignorant things about trans people. Ignorance alone isn't a character flaw, so I try to be gentle in telling him otherwise, which is hard because I'm offended at the time, but I try. I tell him that biological sex does not equal gender, and in fact it's quite offensive to say so; to refer to a trans woman as "actually a man but would like to be addressed as if he were a woman."
I gave him everything he needed to be decent, I gave him information, I gave him the chance to listen, I gave him what I hope was equal treatment and fair, non-condescending speech. But no. As long as I was the only one offended, he wanted to keep thinking that people have the right to know a trans person's genitalia, because that's their "real gender." And to him, there was nothing wrong thinking this, because none of his other non-trans followers were offended, so as long as he was alienating only a minority of people who considered themselves his friend, nothing else mattered. Then he blocked me and stopped responding to everything I asked him except whatever related directly to the commission I had from him.
I liked him so much, and I wanted to be his friend so badly; I wanted chat with him again, and hang out in his streams, and buy him pizza, and watch him draw cute art, and continue to consider him a kind and understanding person... and he just ruined everything. He broke my heart.
And I'm not trying to be melodramatic... it really does feel the same way. Wish I knew why I keep thinking about him today. I'm not about to stop caring about people, but sometimes it really hurts.
Caloric content of I Can't Believe it's Not Butter spray
General | Posted 12 years agoBecause of stupidness, I Can't Believe it's Not Butter spray can be labelled as calorie-free, despite being an 8-oz bottle composed primarily of oil. HOWEVER. There's still a way to figure out the reasonable maximum amount of calories in there.
We know of everything listed on the back, soybean oil is going to be the most calorically dense (pure fat is generally said to be about 9 calories per gram, most sources I'm finding say 8.84c/g for soybean oil). Ingredients are listed in order of most to least. There are 12 ingredients listed, which theoretically means each ingredient could be a 12-way even split, but that's pretty unlikely. The first ingredient is water, the second, soybean oil.
However, the third ingredient is salt. Water and soybean oil are both sodium-free. From the nutrition facts, we know that five sprays is 1% daily value (which would be 20mg) of sodium. Let's assume the maximum that could be called 1% would be slightly less than 1.5% (or else they'd have to round up to 2%), so 29.9mg. Divide by five (number of sprays), multiply by 1,130 (the number of servings in a bottle), and you have a maximum amount of sodium of about 6700mg. Salt, being a mix of sodium and chloride, is about 338mg of sodium per gram, which means that the third ingredient, salt, is a maximum of 17g. The entire bottle, we know, is 226g (says so on the front), and eight fluid ounces. Technically the other ingredients could all be 17 grams too, which would give us a hefty portion of the bottle, but after "sweet cream buttermilk" we start getting into what are typically trace ingredients, like lethicin and polysorbate. So salt is at most 17g, sweet cream buttermilk might be near that, but we can assume the rest are probably negligible.
So if we subtract salt from the maximum capacity and assume that the other ingredients are negligible, we know that since water is the first ingredient, the remaining amount is, at most, half soybean oil. Let's also assume sweet cream buttermilk is 17g, since it's a non-trace ingredient. 226 - (17 + 17) = 192 / 2 = 96g of soybean oil. Let's assume sweet cream buttermilk is as calorically dense as soybean oil (it must be close) and just call it 113g of oil. At 8.84 calories per gram (call it 9 if you want, it won't make much difference after the following steps) that means the bottle contains a maximum (rounded up) of 999 calories (18 more if you said 9c/g). Dividing by 1,130, the amount of sprays in a bottle, gives you 0.884 (0.9 for 9c/g) calories per spray. The other ingredients are not calorie free, so we can assume a tiny bit extra amongst all the others, and may as well round up.
TL;DR - 1 CALORIE PER SPRAY

Question: What do you like to do?

Transgender animals
General | Posted 13 years agoSo this is something I've always been curious about: If you were an actual anthro animal who was trans, and went through hormone replacement therapy, what sorts of gender dimorphic attributes come with hormones, and which don't?
For example, if you're a trans boy lion, would hormones give you a mane? Or would that need to be done artifically?
How about trans deer guys? Would they grow horns? Come to think of it, since horns are always growing and molting in relation to the stag sexual cycle, would they also fall off if you went MtF?
These questions keep me up at night. xD And the crazy thing is, it's not just a hypothetical fantasy question if we're basing these anthros off real animals. But I have no idea how many specialists there are in the field of zooendocrinology.

Wanting to seem smart and feel safe can make you into a jerk
General | Posted 13 years agoFair warning, this is weighing in on recent drama.
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/4180578/
A commissioner has had a chargeback issued on his account, putting all sorts of recently commissioned artists is trouble. Now there are probably maybe one or two people in the entire world who fully understand what's going on here, depending on what actually went down. This might be a hacker, it might be a vengeful ex, it might be the commissioner themselves.
But there is an ugly, ugly trend in the way people are treating this guy, and it's the exact same trend that has been seen on countless other PayPal disputes: People who will take one look and insist, %100 that this person is a scammer who is screwing people over.
Yes, PayPal has a number of safeguards in place, but honestly, just look at the number of previous times this has gone down. This has happened before, with everything being rectified, and there have and still will be people who insist beforehand (or even after) that it was all a big scam, because there is "simply no way" that it could have happened by a malicious party.
Really?
In my view the big problem here is people's twofold desires to not look like a sucker, and to feel safe in the world. We see this all the time with conspiracy theories. "How could a small group of terrorists possibly get past all our safeguards and kill scores of innocent people? No no, the government had to have planned it somehow." This is actually significantly less scary, that some shadow government organized the whole thing, than the simple and frightening truth: Sometimes, bad things happen for no reason, despite our best efforts to avoid them.
Now maybe this guy is a "scammer." Maybe he's trying to get a bunch of art for free, or suddenly decided he wanted his money back and did it the dick way. But we don't know for sure. And so that's really neither here nor there. No, what's more important is that the idea that it is absolutely, simply IMPOSSIBLE for something this awful to happen to him must be believed certain people.
Because if it could happen to him, it could happen to them.
So for their own peace of mind, he has to be, he must be a scammer. Because if he's not, than maybe the world is a lot scarier than they first thought. Maybe something like this could happen to someone who did no wrong.
Well to those people? I suggest perhaps it might be time to look inwards, and grow a little bit. I for one believe in innocence until proven guilty.

Radio silence [ranty]
General | Posted 13 years ago(Note: The person mentioned whom I e-mailed will not read this, so don't worry about it being you.
What is "radio silence"?
Radio silence is, quite simply, talking to someone online and getting no response whatsoever.
Now I understand that people have their own lives, they can be AFK, they can be forgetful, whatever. That's not what I'm talking about. More specifically, in this case, I'm talking about the practice of knowingly ignoring someone who talks to you.
And all I have to ask is "Why?" I absolutely cannot fathom the mindset behind an adult person who does this. It's more understandable if we don't know each other, or if you're feeling especially shitty, but there are a number of people who seem to think that this is an acceptable way of communicating, even in the context of talking business.
Now of course, there's no way to say for sure when someone is doing this, unless, as happened to me recently, when they practice it selectively within the context of a single e-mail; i.e., reading one portion and fervantly ignoring other portions they don't want to talk about, no matter if you remind them in a followup or not. But generally, that's why people online do it. There's always a plausible excuse.
But sometimes the possibility of plausible excuses runs its course of believability, and you know someone is simply ignoring you. Not because you necessarily did anything wrong, not because they're feeling bad, but just because they don't want to talk to you.
This mindset just strikes me as so incredibly childish. I don't understand it. You know what? If you don't want to talk to me or about something, just tell me. It's not difficult. If I'm ignored, I feel hurt and disrespected, but if you're just honest with me, then at least I know where I stand and I don't have to worry or wonder about it. Furthermore, I respect you in return.
I once lost a very, very close friend because of her steadfast relial on using radio silence as a means of avoiding any conflict whatsoever. But in doing so, she pushed us apart at an alarming rate, until neither of us wanted anything to do with the other. And don't misunderstand, this is not a case of "I need some space/time alone" that I failed to respect. No, this was simply a case of me asking, talking, greeting, and getting N O T H I N G in response.
Until, finally, there was nothing left between us anyway.
Please talk to your friends. If they're actually your friends, they deserve it.
