It’s been in “the talks” unofficially via rumors, leaked info and various other shady sources that Valve has been secretly working on a “Steam Box” a console-centric PC platform for years, which is sort of how everything kind of works with Valve until they unveil something officially, never solidifying a yes or no until the time they deem right. Well this CES 2013 had the Piston, (They really love wordplay I guess) debuting at both the Valve booth and the Xi3 booth for the first time officially and man, this thing is something interesting.

Before we go any further however, it is important to note that this is not a Steam Box in any way, officially or otherwise. Tom Giardito, Valve rep at CES made it clear that the Piston is only a possible Steam Box and that a definitive single choice for a officially licensed Valve portable pc would happen only after extensive testing by the company’s discretion. So the gears are finally turning, but don’t expect anything definitive to pop up concerning their foray into console game anytime soon, maybe even this year.

That being said, the Piston…is freaking cool, or at least what they claim about the Piston is. Within the square device is a quad-core 64-bit x86-based processor, up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, an SSD as large as a terabyte, support for up to three displays and resolutions of up to 4096x2160. . The Piston is also built to be modular, with the motherboard split between 3 pieces set at right angles that form the inner wall of the cube, allowing the device upgradeable capacity where consumers can switch out various parts when newer and better components come out. On top of all this, Xi3 Is currently making the claim that it can operate at 40 watt under load while playing games and deliver at “under $1000”. If they can deliver on these specifications, then this is technology that could make a tangible merge between console and PC platforms.

While these specs exist within the Piston (Or more accurately, partially within the X7A modular computer that Xi3 is basing the Piston off of), there have been no working models seen yet and for all intents and purposes this is still just a display model only with parts being listed more as possibilities than a reality. But this early on, it doesn’t matter what we think or guess because I’ll be highly surprised if the Piston ever releases as it looks now for retail without major changes in design, function and hardware. The interviews and articles concerning the machine make the CES debut sound like a tech demo more than anything close to a functioning final product. Until we see a concrete breakdown list of specifications from a working model, I wouldn’t take anything said about it as concrete, because more than likely they will change, hopefully for the better.

The goal, among the many that people are theorizing, that Gabe Newell has actually discussed was the eventual use of the Piston to have a single GPU run to multiple screens for use by multiple users, “…So you could have one PC and eight televisions and eight controllers and everybody getting great performance out of it. We’re used to having one monitor, or two monitors - now we’re saying let's expand that a little bit." What Valve has also mentioned is the high possibility of not one but multiple Steam Boxes, based around various foci of consumer use, (Gaming/travel/budget etc.) to be offered when it does release to allow choice when buying much like most laptop manufacturers do. So far portability seems to be the Piston’s biggest strength, something for use with your friends to game in multiplayer set-ups, possibly off one copy of the game or perhaps using some sort of wireless login for multiple people.

Valve has at least confirmed that while they plan to use Linux for the default operating system to build the Steam Box, there will be no restrictions on what operating system you decide to install if you prefer Windows or a Mac OS, “We’ll come out with our own and we’ll sell it to consumers by ourselves. That’ll be a Linux box, [and] if you want to install Windows you can. We’re not going to make it hard. This is not some locked box by any stretch of the imagination.”

Again, this is Valve, so people can guess till the end of times and not know a single concrete fact until anything more is released by Valve or Xi3. And as it currently stands, while it seems likely that Xi3 will hopefully come out with some more information regarding the Piston, Valve is not set to reveal any more news for some time, possibly not even this year, beyond pointing out that the neither the Piston nor anything else currently being worked on is the final Steam Box.

So nothing more to say at the moment then keep waiting chums, as the saying goes, good things come in time and there’s not much more we can do but look to seeing what Valve or Xi3 has to show us in the new year.

I'm actually pretty reluctant to post something like this because I feel people have (had) a habit of exaggerating events concerning bad times at cons. However, the stories placed on the petition blog and form what I've heard concerning the fire alarm scare, (which I can verify personally most of what was said concerning it) kind of forced my hand.

That's alot. That's a fuckton alot, especially in terms of selecting and cutting the chaff out and being left with 200+ acceptable images. And I was being extra picky near the end, throwing out some filler stuff. The beginning of things I was hitting 50 with a bunch of whatevers thrown in there. Now I'm gonna have to get way stricter on what passes.

Today I found an FA journal where someone was talking about how their social phobias had driven people away and left them isolated. They mentioned how they were beyond help and apologized to everyone they've hurt . . . and then said 'goodbye'.

I got a sick feeling in my stomach and knew I had to act. I sent the person a list of mental health hotline numbers to call, and then contacted the site admins via a trouble ticket and note. I waited 4.5 hours for a reply, and then was told that they 'cannot assist in this matter' even though they informed me in the same trouble ticket that their policy states they 'can release personally identifiable information (birth date, e-mail address, ISP/IP or other aliases) when such actions are necessary to to investigate reports of illegal activities, fraud or situations involving potential risk or endangerment to the physical safety of our users.' This certainly falls under 'potential risk' and 'endangerment to the physical safety of our users'. I don't know the real name of the person who wrote the journal, or their contact info, and I don't know where else to turn.

We need to fix this!

We've all seen depressed furs post very dramatic journals and then thankfully be fine the next day. Sadly, we've also seen far too many friends and loved ones end their lives. We need to take every cry for help seriously! Depression and mental illness is a very real condition that affects millions of people, and we as a community need a plan of action!

Death is permanent. One dark moment can take someone away from us forever. It doesn't need to happen! There's help out there! We've all been through some horrible times in our lives when we felt things would never get better . . . but they always do. With professional help, the support of family and friends, and time, the darkness always ends. We need to help people through those desperate moments so they have a chance to see that life is precious and worth living.

So I'm calling on FA, SoFurry, and ALL websites in this community to install an "emergency" button that not only provides users with online resources and hotline information, but allows them to submit an "emergency ticket" when they see someone in danger. These tickets would be monitored 24/7 for immediate response, and the administrators who handle them would have a definite plan of action so that if there's a potential threat to a fur's safety the proper authorities will be contacted immediately.

If it's a false alarm, then thank God. One of our fellow furs is alive and safe and we can rest easy. But if it's real and we save just ONE life . . . isn't it worth it?

I'm sending this information to site owners in hopes that we can take action and help our community. If this is something you'd like to see on your website of choice, contact the site owner and ask them to include it.

Our Furry Community isn't just about artwork, fursuits, conventions, and having a good time. We're a family, and we need to look out for one another.
