On 51st and Central Chapter 1
Posted 13 years agoDead beat. I walked into my home and turned on the lights. Quiet as usual. I proceeded to the hallway and placed my keys in what is supposed to be a candy dish, but living alone has its disadvantages so it was used as a tray for pens, pencils, some mail and small stuff. I walked to the kitchen, pulled out a chair from the table, sat on it and realized when I saw the digital clock on the stove read 11:29 p.m. how late it actually was. I had been so busy today at the hospital that I hadn't called or texted Cecilia to let her know that I missed her dearly and wanted to know what she had meant this morning after we spoke last. However, it didn’t matter. I glanced at the digital clock which now read 11:30. 'Three...two...one...' I counted down in my head and found I was right on time, for at that moment, my cell phone rang. I pulled it out of my jacket pocket and stared at the LCD screen for a moment. It was her. It was Cecilia. It can't be helped when these things are predictable, but that's because we're perfect like that and it is in this that we are in synchronicity.
My cell phone rang 2 more times and I answered it. “Hello Chase," said the familiar sweet voice as it echoed in my head. We hadn't spoken since this morning before she left to work as a florist at the local flower shop. I recalled that she had wanted to tell me something important before she had to go. What was it? My mind kept racing with that begging question all day. "I know what we need," Cecilia continued. Hearing those words... it was an entreaty. Just asking me to listen. This claim to knowledge, whatever it was that she wanted to tell me, I just knew I had to find out. I propped myself on the chair and waited to hear what those sweet enticing lips had to say. Waited like a poor puppy whose owner was dangling a strip of bacon in front of him telling him to sit when all he wanted was the treat. As I sat there, my breathing made her conscious of the eagerness inside me. My eagerness to the words of which would escape those lips. Then I heard her through the receiver. "We need some time off..."
"Some time off?" I mimicked turning the question into a statement. By this time I was so confused at what she had meant. 'Is this a joke?' I thought to myself. 'No it can't be. Cecilia has never been much of a joker.'
"Cecilia, my love, I don't understand what you could possibly mean. We are perfect. We've nothing to complain about. Nothing."
"I tire of monotony, Chase." she said in a stale tone. "So, I've been thinking...How about we play a game, darling?" her tone suddenly changed as if she was aroused by the thought of it. ‘Monotony? Am I that boring? I thought we had fun on our dates. I try to make them enjoyable and memorable as possible’ "W-what...kind of game?" I replied both excitement and fear made palpable.
"We cease our relationship..." she paused trying to think of a time frame, "Let's say... oh I don't know… one week"
In silent protest, I let out a drawling sigh. I didn't like the idea of not being able to see her. It was hard on me as it was what with our conflicting work schedules, but I'm not gonna lie, it was something new. Something new that it enticed me with great curiosity, just like a lusty, sinful secret. The desire to act further upon it made it oh so more delightful.
"I don't know about this," I mumbled, "it would certainly kill me. I don't see much of you anymore like we first used to."
"I know..." she said bluntly.
The solemn night concluded. The deed was done. I had told her I loved her but she rebutted with a dial tone. I knew then that she was serious. I felt funny afterwards because I couldn't help but smile in rumination. Rumination about how erratic the idea was. 'Oh well, knowing her she has big plans in store for us.'
