1 Year Sober
General | Posted 8 years agoHi again,
I haven't posted here since I got to Germany and it's been pretty crazy, given the title of this journal. I'm currently in Poland on a support mission and hit my year mark out here, 1 whole year without alcohol. I quit last year on April 30th. I was already two weeks into my program still in denial, but thankfully I thrive in structured environments that tell me what I can and cant do, so when I was restricted from alcohol-use I finally listened. The following months gave me enough time sober to realize that I was indeed an alcoolic and needed to stop. Two months ago I was released from my program with the full intention to never touch the stuff again. So far so good.
So, I've kind of known that I was an alcoholic for a few years now but never did anything about it. I always made excuses as to why it was okay. I'll watch myself more, I was on anti-depressants, my friends are just bitchy about it, etc. When really I think I knew it was my own problem. It only took 4-5 social incidents to get me to finally stop.
At least now I can finally attend social events that have alcohol and be okay. If you ever notice me spacing out at a party it means I'm fighting urges and need a breather. But I can do it.
I don't have anything inspiring to say about it. I just felt the need to put it down in a journal because it is a significant milestone in my life. I don't take pride in it though, anytime someone compliments me or praises me for my progress I brush it off. I don't think I deserve credit for doing something any other regular person can do effortlessly. I told a friend earlier that I equate it to praising someone for not murdering for a whole year. Good job, you did something virtually every normal functioning human being does everyday.
Maybe one day I'll embrace it. For now it's a simple decision, either I continue my path of sobriety or I destroy my life. There is no middle ground for someone like me. I guess I'm proud that I haven't destroyed my life and career yet. My relationship with Dusty has been going strong, I'm really happy about that. Hopefully we can live together in the coming years. I'm also hoping to get a tattoo next month to permanently mark my sobriety, something with a tick marker to count every year I haven't drank alcohol.
Anyway, that's all for now. Thank you for reading.

Deployment, Georgia, and Germany
General | Posted 10 years agoHey all,
It's been a while. I've been in the States since late June. Came back in one piece and in good health. It was boring in Kuwait, but I'm glad to have experienced it.
Right now I'm back in Georgia, but while I was deployed I arranged for my next duty station. It's going to be in Germany, near Nuremberg (correct me if I spelled that wrong). I'm really looking forward to that, it'll beat Georgia for sure. I've already been contacted by my sponsor from my new unit, Germany is going to have a nice set up for me. I leave in January!
Life as usual aside from that, I may try to go to MFF this year since it'll line up nicely with my PCS leave.
Figured I'd post a small update to let anyone curious know that I am indeed still alive. I hope you're doing well!
Take care of yourselves out there.

Deploying to Kuwait
General | Posted 11 years agoHey guys, I don't post much often because I don't really have much to say, but I wanted to update ya'll on this.
I'm deploying in about 3 weeks to Kuwait. I've been preparing for the past month or so and am really looking forward to this opportunity. I'll be back around July of next year, so no cons until then!
I'll post again when I get there safely.
Stay well.

Fort Stewart, now dog-faced.
General | Posted 13 years agoWelp, I've finally finished my training in the Army, I graduated February 27th from my AIT. Then on March 1st I left to go to my first duty station, Fort Stewart. I'm still in processing right now (lot of paperwork) but today I was assigned to my unit and met my boss.
He showed me around our Brigade area and introduced me to the soldier I will be replacing in a couple month. I will be working at a battalion headquarters as an IT administrator. I even get my own desk! :D
As for deployment, my sergeant has told me that the brigade I am assigned to is currently returning from deployment. So I actually have about a year before deploying.
I'm incredibly excited to be finally starting my military career, it's been far too long being stuck in training!
Oh yeah, also FWA! I shall be attending, come meet me or see me again and give me cuddles :D
And that's everything there is for now!

Orders
General | Posted 13 years agoWelp, got my orders. No where special, cool, or exciting. I'm seriously just a three hour drive away from where I currently am.
I'm going to Ft. Stewart with the 3rd Infantry Division. Staying in freaking Georgia, yaaay!
I'll get attached to a unit from there, we'll see who I'm attached to in March.
Just a little update.

Settled in.
General | Posted 13 years agoGreeeeeetings, from Fort Gordon!
It's been nearly a month and a half since I graduated Basic at Fort Benning. I've gotten quite settled here in Fort Gordon, across this lovely state. It's certainly been a drastic change in atmosphere (having time to eat food took some adjusting to.) But I've adjusted well enough.
Right now I'm in Bravo Company, 447th Signal Battalion, 15th Signals Brigade. Learning my MOS, 25B.
Computer networking stuff, basically. A+..CCNA 1 and 2... Security+. That kind of good stuff.
It's a lot of information awful fast. We spent two weeks on each course when each course is meant to be a semester long in college. It's been pretty stressful but I've been making by just fine.
It's funny, too. I thought I'd get more sleep here now that I was in a less combative focused environment, but I actually get about 4 to 5 hours a night! I guess that's what happens when you mix college and the military.
In other news, I took and passed my APFT for AIT. I scored a 276, which was high enough to also get the APFT award c:, I got to shake the Battalion Commander's hand and everything! :D, just one more certificate to add to my plate.
I suppose I should talk about Holiday Block Leave while I'm at it. I'll be getting ten days of leave in December for the holidays. I get back home in San Jose on December 20th and will be leaving December 30th.
I don't really have that much planned for now.. but I will be spending a couple days with my good friend
nova-shepherd c:, from there I just plan on spending time with my family and hanging out with my all of my other friends!
I'm really looking forward to going back home, this has been the longest I've been away from home in my entire life.
Oh snap, I almost forgot! I got my orders the other week. I've currently got orders for Germany! Can you believe that? :3, I'm pretty stoked about hearing that. A lot of my Platoon Sergeants and instructors have had many good things to talk about Germany. I'm looking forward to being able to go to Europe :D, I'll also definitely need to find out where all my German fur friends are at too! :P
...anywho! That's all I really got for now in terms of updates. Life's going well, making by just fine.
Drive on, as they always say.

I am an American Solider.
General | Posted 13 years agoYeah, still not very active. That hasn't changed. I think I continue because if anyone happens to check FA, I at least have updates as to what's going on in my life, plus I have plenty to update on!
On July 9th, I left my home and family to join the Army. I was shipped to Fort Benning Georgia where I trained for 9 weeks in all things it takes to become a solider. It was easily the most difficult thing I've ever endured in my life, but I did it. And I'm damn proud of that. On September 20th, I was able to stand on the parade fields with the rest of my Company (I was actually able to be the Company guidon bearer!) and finally become apart of the United States Army.
It was an awfully great day, I got to see my parents again and spend the day with then on pass. But the next day I had to be off to my next training station, Fort Gordon. And that's where I'm currently stationed. I'm basically being trained to become a computer technician. You know, networking and stuff. Which means I'll be apart of the Army Signal Corps, which I think is pretty neat!
I won't have my orders to my duty station until next year, so I have no idea where I'm going after this :D
But uh, yeah! That's a little update/thing to add as a sort of timeline of events. Yay!

General | Posted 14 years agoI'm quite terrible at being active here. Oh well.
Anynoodle! As of August 4th, I became an official member of the United States Army. I'm signed up for five years and eight months as an IT Specialist. Basically computer administration, fun stuff! I ship out July 9th, since I need to finish high school first, and such!
And until then I'm signed into the Delayed Entry Program which is basically a weekly training with my Recruiting Station's unit where I can hopefully get in some early promotions, not to mention the loads of helpful knowledge about Basic Combat Training and Drill.
Along with that I've also started working out daily, spare the weekends, which feels amazing to get out and improve myself :D
But uh, yeah! That's a nice little update to fill in that... eight month gap!
Hooah!
