Updates: Anthrocon, Job Search, Moving
General | Posted 12 years agoI know I haven't been around on here much lately. This summer's been crazy. But I'm trying to get back into my virtual existence, in addition to my regular life, so here I am, telling y'all about how things are for me at the present time.
Anthrocon.
Anthrocon is, and always will be, the highlight of my summer. This year, I went with my mate and a few friends, and good times were had by all. Though I did hit a few snags early in the trip, due to circumstances that were my own fault, I do consider the weekend in Pittsburgh to be a success. It was a great break from my boring, mundane life, and it was a fantastic reminder why I enjoy being a Furry in the first place.
Job search.
I have been trying to find a job in technical theatre since April. I've been looking at places in or around Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York City..... I didn't get many responses all summer, and it's been very frustrating for me. It got to the point where I was questioning whether my college degree was worth it, and if I'd just have to say "screw everything" and just take a dead-end job that I'd be stuck at forever. In fact, up until this morning, I was planning to go as far as submitting an application to a certain corporate superstore chain. No offense to anyone who works there, it's just not for me.
This morning, things changed.
Moving.
This morning, I received an email from a manager at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Virginia. I had sent in my application last week, and only yesterday sent in supporting materials, such as resume and a reference letter. The email I got this morning asked if I was available for a phone interview less than a few hours later. I immediately sent one back, saying yes, I'm available. So she called, and I felt that my responses were acceptable at best. Anyway, she said they'd make a decision in a few days, and call me back. It wasn't a few days latter. It was about two hours later when my phone rang again. Someone else from Busch Gardens, telling me that they'd like to offer me a job. So needless to say, there's a few details to work out yet, but it seems like I'll be moving to someplace near Williamsburg, VA sometime around mid-August. And while I'll probably end up living in an apartment or something provided by Busch Gardens, it'd be incredibly awesome to get to know some people/Furries in that area. So if you are, or know someone who is, in the Williamsburg, VA, area, feel free to send me a message or something!

Updates and such
General | Posted 12 years agoSo I finally did something about my SUV that caught on fire (see here: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/4460360/). I ended up selling it to my uncle, who just happened to need a new vehicle, and just happens to be retired, so he has time to fix it up. That's the good news, I guess. The bad news is, I only got a few hundred dollars for it, and I still have to pay off the $2000 loan I took out for it.
Still, I'm graduating from college in less than two weeks. That's good. However, it means I lose my work-study position. Therefore, I'm in the process of finding a job. And while I'm between jobs, I'll have no source of income. I'll still have bills to pay, of course, and I really can't say how long it will take me to land a job. And if it's a job I plan to stick with, it'll require me to relocate, which I can't really afford unless I secure a decent job. I'm also without a vehicle of my own to relocate with, which means yet another loan I'll have to take out, while still paying back a loan for a vehicle I no longer own. And on top of all that, since I'll be graduating, my student loans will become due, and I'll have to start paying those, too.
The good news is that I have a number of applications sent out that I'm waiting on replies from, but who knows how that will go. I do know, however, that I refuse to work in a fast food joint. No offense to any who might read this that do, in fact, work in fast food joints; it's just not for me.
Don't mind anything below this line, it's just ranting and generally stuff that you should ignore. Continue at your own risk. You have been warned.
****************************************
Damn, I really need to stop making these late-night journals. Hell, I don't know why I post anything on here, anyway. This will show up in 73 people's inboxes, and I'll get two, maybe three responses, if I'm lucky. Granted, I know some of the accounts watching me are inactive, or the owners haven't logged in in two years or something like that. That's fine. But I know at least 5 people started watching me in the past month and a half, plus the ones I know log in regularly. And that's not counting the people I'm hoping for responses from. If you read this far, comment with the funniest word you can thing of. I'm going to bed now, and hoping I can get some sleep.

Raffle: Chance to win a pic with an awesome character!

cenny is hosting a raffle to celebrate 50k pageviews. Prizes include a pic of your character with his! See here for more details: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/4502099/Car "Problems" and other stories
General | Posted 12 years agoSo I have a few things I need to discuss in this journal.
First, I noticed today that I'm up to 68 watchers, which means that the next one is a special one, if you know what I mean. Maybe I'll do something special, but I can't promise anything.
Next on the list is a big one. I own a 1998 Ford Expedition. Shortly after 9:30 EST this morning, while I was driving on the Interstate, it caught on fire. Good news is, most of the vehicle only suffered smoke damage, but the front passenger seat is gone, and the truck is now unusable. Here's the full story:
While I was driving, I noticed a burning smell. Now, normally, this is a big signal, but I'd been having problems with the truck for a few weeks, so I didn't think anything of it. But then I noticed an orange flickering glow reflecting off of the fake wood paneling on the dashboard. It was then that I saw the fire under the front passenger seat. I pulled off to the shoulder, grabbed what I could, and called 911, then called my mom. Within a few minutes, I could see the truck filling with smoke, and some of it leaked out between the doors and windows and such. Luckily, two guys in a pickup, with an empty car dolly trailer (that'll be important later) stopped, and offered to help. One of them opened the passenger door, releasing a big puff of brown smoke (thanks to the leather seats). They were able to extinguish the fire using a couple water bottles, the remnants of my iced tea that I'd been saving for later, and half a gallon of windshield washer fluid I had stashed in the back of the truck. They pulled out my iPod, which I'd left in the center console in my rush to evacuate the vehicle, as well as some other things which I was highly appreciative of. A state trooper pulled up and took my information, and radioed to the firefighters that the fire was out. Then the fire department showed up, saw that the fire was indeed out, and left. The trooper noted that I had pulled off the highway in an area with a very narrow shoulder, so we (the two guys and I) managed to push my truck a few dozen feet to a place with a wider shoulder. The trooper confirmed my story and my information. He then suggested using the guys' car trailer to haul my truck a mile or so up the highway to a gas station at the next exit, which we did. We met my mom there, thanked the two men and the trooper profusely, and got my truck off their trailer. I had somewhere to be, so the two men offered to take me there, since they were going that way anyway. My mom stayed with the truck for a while to call the insurance company and take pictures (which I now have copies of). In the end, it turns out that my insurance won't cover it, and I can't really afford to get it fixed. What this means is, I am now without the truck I bought in November. I'm still not entirely sure what I'm going to do with it, beyond getting it towed back to my house. I'll post pics if you want, assuming it's allowed under the current version of the AUP.....
Finally, I received an unexpected phone interview with a place I had submitted an application to earlier this week. I thought it went well, despite the fact that they're looking for someone to start immediately, while I can't start until May, after I graduate from college. So we'll see where that goes.
Thanks for reading. I just had a ton of stuff on my mind that I needed to unload, in the hopes that I might get some sort of response.

"Must have visual refs" and a suggestion
General | Posted 13 years agoSo I know I don't have a very large following here, and I can almost guarantee that maybe five people will read this. That being said, there's been something I've been keeping to myself for quite a while, for fear of being labeled as a drama-starter.
Anyway, the base of my problem is that I don't have a proper visual reference for my fursona (or any other characters I've created, for that matter). So whenever I see "Must have visual reference" on a contest, raffle, etc, it discourages me from entering. And that bothers me, because some of these raffles are intended for people who otherwise can't afford commissions of their own characters.
Now you're probably thinking, "So why don't you just commission someone for a ref sheet?" The short answer is that I can't afford it in this stage of my life. The long answer is that I'm a full-time college student with a part-time job that makes minimum wage, who has loans and bills to pay for. On top of that, I'll be graduating from college soon, so withing the next 6 months I foresee moving out of my parents' house, to where ever I can find a decent, long-term job in my chosen career field (theatrical design and technical theatre, for those interested). So no luxury spending for me for a while.
But then that leads into, "Why don't you just draw your own ref sheet?" To which I respond, "Have you seen my gallery? A two-year-old with a box of crayons can draw just as well as I can. So that options out.
This brings us to Phase 2 of this journal, in which I finally reveal what my suggestion is. If you're going to raffle off commissions for people who otherwise can't afford it, why not raffle off ref sheets? Yes, I understand that someone who needs a ref sheet will not already have a visual reference for you to work with, but that's the point of this, isn't it? I mean, I'm not an artist, so maybe I don't understand how it works. If that's the case, then I would absolutely love for someone who IS an artist to clue me in.
PS, I'm not making demands here, and I understand that if a ref sheet were the prize in a raffle, that I probably won't win. I don't care. Think of this more as me speaking on behalf of myself as well as those in similar situations.

Hey, guys! Check this out! Good news for all Pokemon fans!
General | Posted 13 years agoSo I came to the realization yesterday that the Gen 6 Fire-type starter Pokemon will evolve to be dual-type. But the good news is, it won't be Fire/Fighting. Instead, I am lead to believe that Fennekin will evolve into a Fire/Flying type. I actually have supporting evidence of this, as follows:
First, there's this: Fennekin's ears are stuffed with Torchics. I don't know who noticed it, but it's a very good observation. In fact, in the official Nintendo renderings of Fennekin, seen HERE, the tufts do indeed look like feathers. Subtlety? Perhaps.
Next is the similarity in pronunciation of the first syllable of the word "Fennec" and the first syllable of the word "phoenix." Yes, I know they're spelled differently, but the phonetics are the strikingly similar. I was tipped off to this resemblance by the back of someone's shirt I saw yesterday, advertising for a particular concert by Tenacious D: Rize of the Fenix.
Now, those are the two signs I've seen indicating that Fennekin will evolve to a Fire/Flying type. There might be more hints out there somewhere, but I guess we won't know for sure until Nintendo releases more information.
Disclaimer: The contents of this journal are purely speculation. I am in no way affiliated with Nintendo or Pokemon.

General | Posted 13 years agoFurry D&D-Type RPG World
General | Posted 13 years agoInspired by an actual D&D Night I attended with a group of friends, I got to wondering how a campaign in which all the characters were Furries would go. So I set about creating this world for tabletop RPGs, and there is a sufficient amount of general information. I'm still lacking in specifics, but I'm hoping to get it to a point where it's actually playable soon.
Information about this world can be found here: http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/furry_dnd
Feel free to look it over and make suggestions, and if you're really interested, I'll be looking for players once it gets to that point.

I have Satan's phone number.
General | Posted 13 years agoApparently, Satan's phone number is 1-717-715-2214, if anyone's interested. Someone needs to call and reserve a space for all the Furries when the world ends. Yiff in hell? Sounds like a good time to me!

Thoughts on the 2012 US Presidential Election, Part 2
General | Posted 13 years agoTime for an unofficial FurAffinity poll! And it's multiple choice!
Who did you vote for today?
A. The candidate you like most.
B. The candidate you hate least.
C. Someone else.
D. Wait, you mean there's more than two options?
E. None of the above.
Let's take this time to come together and acknowledge the fact that NEITHER major political party is the right choice for our country in its present circumstances. Until today, I never considered myself a political activist. But desperate times call for desperate measures, I guess. Mark my words. The day is coming when American government will transition from a political system dominated by two major parties will transition to a true multi-party system. I know at least three people who originally intended to vote for third-party candidates. I truly believe that if everyone who wanted a third-party candidate to win today would have voted that way, we could have made not just a difference, but an improvement.

FREE ART! NO CATCH!
General | Posted 13 years agoWell, ok. there is one catch. It's art from me, not someone else.
So I have this 100-page sketch book that I bought almost a year ago, I think. I dug it out tonight because I was bored and have nothing better to do. Upon doing so, I noticed that only a handful (less than 10) pages have been used so far. So here's my proposition! Send me your ideas, and I'll try to draw it. It won't be anything fancy, just whatever your idea is, to the best of my ability. Check my gallery for examples. I'm not charging for these, by the way. Absolutely free. No limits. Anything you want, I'll try to draw. Any takers?

General | Posted 13 years agoThoughts on the 2012 US Presidential Election
General | Posted 13 years agoLet me first start off by admitting that I did not watch the first debate, and I don't plan to watch any of them. It's just two guys avoiding the questions being asked of them, and not giving any straight answers. Furthermore, there's only two candidates present, which really bothers me. So I guess you could call it a boycott on the debates for those reasons. It also pisses me off that campaign ads on TV are nothing but attacks on the opposing candidate, and there is no real "pros and cons" for each candidate, only "here's why you shouldn't vote for that guy." And again, there's a lack of third-party candidates running TV ads.
The glory of our political system is that if you don't agree with one extreme or the other, that's your choice. But at the same time, you don't have to be stuck with whatever other people choose for you. If you can find enough people that agree with you, you can do something about it. Start your own political party, circulate a petition, whatever. Start a movement for change. If you can convince the right people, things will get done for the better.
Now, don't get me wrong. In no way, shape, or form do I consider myself a political activist. I like to believe that I'm right in the middle of the political spectrum. I don't agree with either of the major parties that dominate our government. What am I doing about it? Well, for one thing, I've been researching third-parties that already exist, and comparing my beliefs to theirs. I've also found myself doing things like this, where I ramble about my political beliefs in an attempt to inform the masses that they don't have to settle with what's given to them. I hear a lot of people making the same complaints that go through my mind. The difference is, they usually end their monologues with "I guess I'll just not vote" or "I guess I'll vote for the lesser of two evils." This leads me to believe that they are not aware of the other options, the "well-kept secrets" of the political world. Well, if you read this far, now you know.
The United States political system is NOT a "Red vs. Blue" issue. There are parties other then the Democrats and Republicans. We are not limited to only two options. More attention needs to be paid to the "third-parties" in the US. Our Democrat or Republican representatives disagree with each other simply because they sit on opposite sides of the spectrum, and we wonder why Congress never gets anything done. My profile picture is a purple square because I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican. I am proud to be an independent voter.

Famous "Furries"
General | Posted 13 years agoWhile I'm in the process of getting my laptop up and running again, here's something for you to think about until I can get my AC2012 Post-Con Report sorted out.
The average person doesn't know what a Furry is. I like to explain it as "people who like cartoon animals" since those are simple terms that most people are capable of comprehending. But something that not a lot of people realize is that Furries are in fact a part of everyday life, even for the most mundane of humans. Take for instance the simple act of grocery shopping. How many times have you gone down the cereal aisle and noticed that "silly rabbit" on a box of Trix, or Tony the Tiger, encouraging kids to "earn their stripes" from the front of every box of Frosted Flakes? Then there's the popular world of sports. Many teams have animal mascots. Off the top of my head, I can think of the Miami Dolphins, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Penn State Nittany Lions. The university I attend has the Huskies, and my high school was the Cougars. People have been anthropomorphizing animals since long before the Furry Fandom came into the picture. So if you ever need to explain what Furries are, here's a list of well-known, yet often unacknowledged Furry characters:
* Tony the Tiger
* the Trix rabbit
* Toucan Sam
* the Cookie Crisp wolf
* Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters
* pretty much any sports team mascot
* the cast of the Sly Cooper video games
* Ratchet from the Ratchet & Clank video games
* the Vlasic Pickles stork
* the Biker Mice from Mars
* Sonic the Hedgehog (and friends)
* the cast of Adventure Time
* the cast of Regular Show
* the cast of The Amazing World of Gumball
* any meme featuring an animal
I think that pretty much covers it for now. Feel free to expand the list if I've forgotten any.

A Bit of Bad News
General | Posted 13 years agoSo before I get to the posting of photos I took and art I drew at Anthrocon this past weekend, and before I can sit down and type up my Post-Con Report, I have an announcement to make.
I got home from Anthrocon Monday evening, and planned to begin sorting through my 360+ photos that night. My laptop, however, had other ideas. At this point, I've been sufficiently convinced that my laptop's hard drive is bad, and that I may have lost everything on it. Needless to say, I'm pretty pissed about it. The protection plan expired this past May (of course), and I was informed that I should start pricing new hard drives. One of my biggest problems with this scenario is that I just came home from Anthrocon, which drained a good chunk of my savings. I haven't even had time to sit down and crunch the numbers from AC to see just how much I spent and how much I have left.
That being said, I have a huge favor to ask of those of you who will read this. I know Anthrocon recently passed and you might not have much in your wallet, but I'd like to take this opportunity to open up for emergency art/story commissions. You can browse my gallery for samples. I can do traditional pencil/ballpoint pen/marker artwork, I have limited skills with Photoshop, and I can compose a decent story. If you're interested, get in touch with me any way you know how. Prices will be "pay what you want" because I'll take anything I can get. Payment will be through PayPal. If PayPal won't work for you, we'll work something else out. If you'd like to help out but don't necessarily want anything in return, let me know and I'll give you my PayPal info.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help out. I really appreciate it.
