My artist's statement:
My artwork features anthropomorphic animal and human-like forms of mostly small sizes generating a slightly kitsch feeling. Nature is intriguing to me. I feel animals create stability in their environment, whereas humans generally create disorder. I find it fun yet challenging to combine both elements into one to create my work. Working within a small scale provides me with the opportunity to make small groups of figures that interact with each other in more informative ways. I use animals to represent humanity, displaying characteristics that explore various situations and events.
Ceramics is my medium of choice. The clay is malleable and can be molded into any form which allows me to put my animal/ human forms into any position. I use a hand building method to make the separate parts such as the head, torso, arms, legs, and the tail, and then attach them together at the end. I finish them off using and mixing multiple underglaze colors and firing them in a kiln, usually to a low range temperature.
