Apps for Writers
Hey guys,
I've decided to share some Apps that I have on my i-phone that I think all you writers out there might find helpful. (I apologize for all the non-Apple users, though, as some of these apps might not apply to you).
"Writers App"
This is an excellent app for outlining stories and its my favorite of all my apps so far. It helps you organize all the information you need to prepare for a story, including the plot, the characters, and even nitty gritty stuff like props and places. It allows you to draw a general outline of the story and it includes subsections to outline individual chapters. It also gives you space to put miscellaneous information for future use. I would definitely suggest this one even if you are not a fervent outliner because it gives so much organization and accessibility to your ideas and material. Don't trust your memory!
"Writer Lists"
This is a great resource when you just can't find the right words. This list covers a broad range of topics and issues that all writers come across in order to help you make sure that you have the right words for the right moments. The list includes words for Characters, Personalities, Plot Structure, Settings and other things. It's a great resource to quickly get ideas for descriptions and character names. It even links some words to a dictionary for your convenience (though not all of them). Its breadth is its greatest strength, as well as greatest weakness, however. It may take a while for you to scroll through all the options.
"Name Dice"
Not a particularly impressive app, but it is good when you are trying to get ideas for character names. It features a pair of dice with a name written on each one. Usually (but not always), the first dice features a first name and the latter features a sir name. This app is helpful when you are just getting started with a story, or you come across a new character and you are browsing for names that might go well together.
"My Writing Spot"
This app is not that impressive at all but it is helpful if you like to voice-write when you're not in front of your computer. Just talk into your phone and watch it record your words into text. Then you can send the text to your email and cut and paste it onto your Word Doc.You have to take this app with a grain of salt, however. First off, it often gets your words confused with others, especially if you are using uncommon (or made up) names. You have to train it to your voice a little (and sometimes it will just refuse to learn). Therefore, prepare to do a lot of editing once the words are on your regular document, which may not be a terrible thing since it forces you to work on your revising skills. There are other apps like this that are more expensive and probably are more compatible, but I've never used them so I can't give you may input on them.
I hope you've enjoyed this.
