What is BPD?
Borderline Personality Disorder is a chronic mental illness. People with BPD suffer very intense emotions and mood swings, and often act impulsively with a poor self-image. Self-harm and suicide, drug abuse, eating disorders, and depression and anxiety are common and accompanied of those with the diagnosis. For these reasons, relationships tend to be chaotic and unstable.
What causes BPD?
Researchers are currently unsure of the direct cause of BPD. The diagnosis seems to run in families, with individuals being five times as likely to be diagnosed when a family member has BPD. Childhood trauma including abuse and neglect and genetics seem to play a role. Researchers have also discovered brain abnormalities.
How do I know that I or a loved one may be suffering from BPD?
Symptoms typically include dissociation, self-harm, very intense emotions and reactions to things that are disproportionate to the situation, impulsive behaviors, fear of abandonment or rejection and a sensitivity to criticism, splitting (black-and-white thinking), unstable relationships, mood swings that change very fast. In severe cases, psychotic symptoms can be present.
