Backstory:
He grew up in a smaller coastal town predominantly composed of Otters. Being a mix breed, he was teased fairly relentlessly about his fox features (foxlike ears, face fluff, and fox fur patterning) by others. Due to the fact that the more foxlike ears and face fluff were a physical problem for him with swimming (ears being unable to pin down properly like other otters to keep water out and his face fluff causing lots of water drag and taking forever to dry unlike otter fur) he believed their teasing and criticisms of him to be true. This caused him to be a loner and predominantly spent his time studying and learning about the physical world around him while enjoying more private swim sessions. This led to him becoming VERY good at understanding how things work and being quite capable of inventing new things.
At a young age, his parents separated with his mother leaving. After getting old enough, he sought to formalize his skills with a proper education and transform it into a profession in the city he heard rumor his mother went to. While searching for his mother, he opened up his own research lab in the city. He found some joy and satisfaction in tackling and solving problems that people approached him with whether they be mechanical, electrical, or chemical challenges. But, the happiness was fleeting as all of his clients typically got the solutions they were looking for and left.

Kind, caring, and sarcastic individual with a desire to fit in, but severely lacked the confidence to do so.

Companionship, physical contact (particularly intimate contact that has more feeling behind it), kind people with a compatible sassy/sarcastic personality, people who are more forward and direct (helps get over his own confidence issues). Helping others find happiness even at personal expense.
