The conversations you'll overhear... (G)
(be funny if anyone actually reads this)
So, yeah, people seem to get this false sense of privacy talking over a cell phone. Like, they'll say whatever's on their mind like they're the only person in the room with the other party, you know, the person at the other end of an imaginary line that ends miles away in who-knows-where?
Yeah, so, I'm messing around in one of the CAD labs, minding my own business when this other guy comes in and starts working on a terminal behind me. At some point, he dials out, or someone calls him. I don't really know, because I'm focused on my own thing, until I catch this line about going into GameStop with $2300, and leaving with... fifty?
Good.
GHOD.
I won't get into how exactly that happened. Leave the guy SOME dignity, but... seriously?
I don't even remember when exactly I last had $2300 to my own name at one time, at least that I didn't have to beg or borrow from somebody else. Last time I recall for sure was when I'd saved up about three thousand to buy the parts for the first computer I ever got myself on my own. That was August 2001.
2001.
August.
Yeah, about a month before THAT.
So... yeah.
And that, apparently, was why he was going to have to wait a bit to pay back the guy on the other end of that conversation. I kept my tongue, but that was about the right time for a quick and quiet exit.
It's been a long, long while since I could seriously contemplate what I'd do with that kind of money. Now some wheels are starting to turn a little, maybe I'll be able to think of such things again. I think -- I HOPE -- I can prove myself a little more sensible.
If not, someone feel free to smack me.
