Story of the Moon rabbit:
In Chinese folklore, the rabbit is often portrayed as a companion of the Moon goddess Chang'e,
constantly pounding the elixir of life for her. The rabbit is sometimes also portrayed pounding medicine for the mortals.

Moon Rabbit Legend/origins:
One day a god came down to earth and took the form of a hungry man. He went to a forest, and wanted to test the animals' ability to live in the woods.
All the animals present brought him food. The monkey climbed into the trees and brought him fruit. The bear went to fish for fish in the river.
The birds hunted insects and worms which they offered to the beggar.
All had a present for the old man. All except the rabbit, which did not have the resources. No matter how many attempts he made, he couldn't find food for the starving man.
The other animals started to make fun of him. The rabbit, however, also really wanted to help the old man, and then asked for a fire to be started.
He then decided to offer the beggar his own life, his own flesh, and sacrificed himself by throwing himself into the fire for man to eat.
The god was very moved by this act, and in his great gratitude saved his life, and rewarded him by sending him to live on the moon.
