The gothic subculture was spawned in the late 70's as a fusion of post punk, new wave, and horror, revolting against the disco and glam scenes. The earliest form of music that propelled the subculture was deathrock and postpunk. Sporting fishnet shirts, tall black leather boots, Trench coats, drag, and more facepaint than a kiss world tour, they hung out at clubs that were often times referred to as "batcaves". Throughout the 80's, the gothic scene was affiliated closely with New Wave music. In the 90's, the Gothic scene faced critical assaults by the media and were even stereotyped as being satanists this was coined as the "satanic panic". Today, It has grown immensely. music festivals specifically for gothic music can be found in Europe. And many clothing lines exist solely for making gothic clothing.
why the word Gothic? In its earliest form, the word Gothic was a form of architecture and an ancient Germanic language. There are a few reasons why this term gradually became used for this subculture. Gothic is generally the type of architecture used in cemeteries. A place that represents horror, Death, and Sorrow. All themes prominent among goth. The architecture frequently contains dark soot covered buildings, and gargoyles and angels who appear to be mourning or in pain. These things frequently evoke the feelings and themes that goth bands sing about. Another reason is because many Goth bands. most often Gothic metal use bell sounds, and symphonic and orchestral elements that re reminiscent of the time in which Gothic architecture was mostly in use.
the term Goth has been used to describe so many things. What is a Goth? it's someone who, aside from wearing lots of black, enjoys the beauty within darkness. They're drawn to the darker aspects of existance. Such as social isolation, dark romance, and are fascinated by all things morbid. Musically, Goths listen to anything. But in particular, Gothic music, which is music that puts lyrical emphasis on pain, suffering, death, darkness, bleeding, feelings of social isolation, and dark romance among other similar things. It is also horror or dark fantasy themed music. It spans a multitude of genres ranging from rock, post punk, metal, new wave, industrial, electronic, neoclassical, and more. not all bands that are popular among goths are technically gothic. the following list of bands includes, but is not limited to:
