Section 230 (G)
Spreading awareness about an issue that poses high risks to online privacy and freedom of speech in the United States.
Section 230 is the law that protects websites and online platforms from being sued for content created by users, and it is a foundational piece of legislation that allows free expression online. Currently, there are legislative proposals and ongoing debates that could weaken or repeal Section 230. Without it, many sites would be forced to shut down, heavily censor content, or become legally vulnerable simply for hosting user posts. This could open the door to legal action against any platform that hosts controversial or adult content.
In other words, Section 230 essentially states that online platforms are not treated as publishers or speakers of their users' created content. This means websites cannot generally be sued for what users post. It also protects platforms that, in good faith, choose to remove or restrict content they consider harmful or objectionable.
