Has the Magic bug bit me? (G)
Wow, it's been a while, hasn't it?
So, about a month ago, my roommate Xabin and I attended this mini board game convention at our local high school. While waiting for someone to play, one of the people in charge actually came down to sit with us and learn how to play Betrayal at House on the Hill 3rd Edition. After we were done playing, he informed us that he had just opened up a local game store called Goblin Mode Gaming. We've been checking it out, and I have to say, while it does need work, I have a feeling it'll help increase interest in card games around our area.
Speaking of card games... one Friday, when I went down there, I was invited to play Magic: The Gathering. They were playing Commander format, and the owner lent me one of his decks to use. I immediately saw one based on FFX, and was like "Yep, this deck is calling to me." Not only did I hold my own as everyone else was explaining the rules to me, but I was also the first one to take an opponent out! Coming from Yu-Gi-Oh, where the game is so fast-paced and duels are over within a few turns nowadays, Magic was a welcome change of pace; biding my time, learning the mechanics, being explained terms, and overall just feeling... welcome.
So what do I do after I play? I buy a copy of the deck for myself. I've already modified it a bit to take better advantage of summons and lore so that I can get more effects, and even the group were impressed at that. They weren't all "You have to play this and this and this to even stand a chance," but more "Some other cards to consider would be such and such if you really want to take off."
As of now, I have a life counter heading my way, a bunch of +1/+1 dice, a spindown die, a deck box to hold everything in place, and even a win under my belt! Let me tell you, that win was probably more exhilarating than any victory I've gotten in YGO in the past five years.
I think the Magic bug has bit me. I hope it didn't bite too hard, because I don't need two games to be spending money on. Maybe it's time to transition away from YGO and only come back to it when and if my Gladiator Beasts get more support. That's one deck I will never abandon, and I don't have a lot of decks to begin with, unlike Xabin. (Seriously, if you saw Xabin's desk, you'd wonder how in the world he can see anything over all the cards, decks, and deck boxes he's got.) It also helps that we now have more places we can go to thanks to us getting into Magic. Yeah, it bit Xabin, too. He's getting a Sonic-based deck. Ironic, considering I'm supposed to be the Sonic geek between us....
