ABOUT ME:
My name is Jen, but I've gone under the name Jocarra online for the past decade or so. I'm 40 years old, happily married, with a B.Sc in animal biology. I'm an illustrator who prefers work with animal and/or fantasy elements - I use primarily digital media but also some traditional, and focus on realistic and semi-realistic paintings as well as a few varieties of lineart-based art. I largely worked freelance, but now am the lead artist for Endless Realms, a D&D-like pen and paper RPG currently in development.
As for hobbies, I am a huge music enthusiast. I am a classically trained pianist and aspiring teacher, although recent and not-so-recent life events have caused me to fall tragically out of practice. I love listening to music and almost always enjoy finding new and unusual instruments, songs, genres and artists - I collect music not just of my own tastes, but also work that I find noteworthy, unique or extraordinarily different, and I'd like to think I have at least one or two examples of any major musical genre represented in my collection.
I also love food - trying new things and appreciating the foods I like is a simple undeniable pleasure for me. I never really cooked much when I was young, but have since really grown to enjoy it. Like my musical tastes, I potentially like just about anything - it all depends on how it's done.
I'm also pretty clearly a nerd. Besides generally enjoying things like science and philosophy (and being a huge music nerd, as previously mentioned), I love good science fiction, fantasy, and character/world-building, and enthusiastically but infrequently get the chance to practice archery and poi. I also enjoy a number of games, from video games to tabletop to cards to PnP RPGs, but I grew up primarily with video games - favourites include the old X-Wing/TIE Fighter series, RPGs like Suikoden, ChronoTrigger and Super Mario RPG, stealth games like Metal Gear Solid, and music games like DDR, Guitar Hero, Osu and Audiosurf.
I also theoretically enjoy writing, although I have much more of a love/hate relationship with it. While I've never quite gotten the hang of creating good narrative flow, I do enjoy world building and have created an extensive universe called The Tripartitus.
I actually would not describe myself as a furry or a therian, but I absolutely would understand if people mistook me for one (my fursona would probably be some kind of anthropomorphic canine/feline hybrid). I love animals (if getting a degree in them was not an indicator), and grew up with a house full of lovely animal companions - to me, a home isn't complete without them - and have always felt a strong affinity for them: if there is a non-human race or character in a show or game, I just automatically find them more interesting. I also admire the terrible beauty and power of predators, specifically, and I think being a fan of creatures like weres, dragons, and mythological monsters is a natural next step.
I leave this last, but really because it's much more personal: more important to me than anything else is my husband. The term really doesn't do him justice - he's my best friend, most trusted advisor, life companion, soul mate. I'm the sort of person who could have wealth and popularity, more money and friends than I could ever need, and still would be unhappy, because the most important thing to me in life is having that one person you love who loves you in return.

Commissions & Life Update
Hey all - I feel a bit bad for not being as social as I used to be, but it's been a rough year and, well, you know how it is, I'm sure :V
About a year ago now, my husband was admitted to the emergency room in need of spinal surgery. Most of December was spent in the hospital - it actually wasn't too bad, all things considered - we even had a lovely little pizza party and watched movies together in his hospital room, and making the best of the situation didn't feel too hard at all (for me, at least).
Fast-forward several months of it, however, and it all started to add up. By mid-late summer, however, my husband was securely on the mend at last and able to get around and return to mostly-regular life, so that was great, but by then I was suffering burnout on a number of levels. Friends from the UK came to stay with us for a couple weeks which was wonderful, but had the side effect of bringing COVID with them - we'd avoided COVID all through the pandemic, only to finally catch it now! We actually hadn't even realised we had it, it was so minor - nothing more than a mild combination of headcold + stomach flu, it seemed... but then it never went away. For months. In fact, we still have it - long COVID! @_@ Again, it's not particularly bad, but god is it exhausting to feel perpetually under the weather...
Still, I think we've been fortunate this year in a number of ways. We didn't have to wait too long before my husband could have his back surgery. There were no complications. Our quality of life has been pretty decent! But between burn out and the rise of AI (which I do think has had an effect in the world of art commissions), I haven't been able to carry as much of the financial burden as I normally have, which brings me to the obligatory self-marketing...
Please consider the homemade bespoke gift of art for yourself and loved ones, from myself or any of the other wonderfully talented people here <3 While I have a small but much-appreciated number of loyal repeat clients, I could definitely use more work 🙏🏻❤️ Thank you so much for your consideration! ❤️🙏🏻
🎁💌🌲 Looking for gifts? Need custom art for your book or roleplaying game? 🎲🎮📘 I'm currently taking commissions of all kinds for December now! 🖌️🎨🖼️ Please PM or email me at jocarra[at]gmail.com for inquiries! I specialise in wildlife and fantasy art, and accept private and non private commissions for personal or commercial use - if you have any questions, please feel free to ask, or click here for more information!
