The Joint Photographic Experts Group image format was created in the early nineties, back when hard drives were still around a gigabyte or were at a premium price, floppy disks predated flash drives and SD cards, and internet speeds whent at dial-up pace.
This file extension (.jpeg & .jpg), still used by high-res digital cameras for good reasons, compresses the image to reduce it's size in bytes, saving some space in the drive (if you don't have the original uncompressed image in the same drive, of course) and making it easier to share via internet or smaller storage devices.
But in the process, it reduces the image's quality by generating artifacts (lossy compression), making it inadequate for digital art, specially pics with higher colour contrast (linearts, non-shaded pics or cel-shaded ones).

This group account is dedicated to all those that, like it's creator, hate (or just dislike, if that's a bit harsh for you) the heavily-used JPEG format due to it's disadvantages over lossless formats like PNG, BMP or RAW (i assume GIF is in a league of it's own, since it supports multiple frames while relying on a 256 color palette).
