S.T.A.R Verse Universe Building: Extinct Civilisation (G)
I won’t cover every extinct civilisation in the S.T.A.R. Verse—doing so could fill a novel on its own. For now, you can assume that any known extinct worlds from the standard Star Trek universe are also extinct in this continuity. In this entry, I’ll focus on two specific civilisations (with more possibly to come later) that continue to have a notable impact on known factions and characters.
Deep within the Delta Quadrant lies a star system with a red sun and several shattered planets. Navigating this system is extremely difficult due to dangerously high levels of radiation that render warp travel impossible. This is the Rao System, and the debris-strewn planets within it are all that remain of the now-extinct Kryptonian Empire.
Though the Kryptonians were warp-capable, they never ventured beyond their home system. Despite this isolation, their technological achievements surpassed even the current capabilities of the Federation. Some historians believe that this advanced technology may have played a role in the system’s eventual destruction.
Krypton itself was destroyed nearly 200 years ago—back when humanity had only just begun to explore the stars. The only reason the Federation knows of Krypton’s existence at all is thanks to its sole known survivor: Kara Zor-El. As the planet’s end approached, her father placed her in a cryoship and launched her away from the doomed world. Her vessel drifted for nearly two centuries, pulled through wormholes and strange anomalies, before finally emerging in the Alpha Quadrant. She was discovered by scientists Jeremiah and Eliza Danvers, who brought her back to Earth.
The second extinct civilisation is tied to a long-dead planet located near the Great Barrier that surrounds the galactic core. Little is known about this world, but it is mentioned in ancient Asgardian and Ennead records as once having been home to a great and noble power that was once used to protect the galaxy. The planet was called Oa.
Oa has been lifeless for thousands of years. Visitors today find only ruins and a desolate wasteland. The most striking feature of the planet is the sheer number of green rings scattered across the surface. No one has been able to move or properly study them; any physical contact results in a painful electrical shock—always the same level of pain, regardless of the species. Even technological attempts to retrieve or scan the rings (such as transporters) end in failure.
Interestingly, rings identical to those found on Oa have occasionally turned up on other planets across the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. These versions can be touched, but scans reveal nothing more than inert materials with no known purpose.
That changed recently when a woman named Jessica Cruz discovered one of the rings. Upon contact, she managed to activate it—revealing its true function. The rings are conduits of power, responding to the user’s willpower to create constructs limited only by imagination. Even so, Jessica’s ring remains bound to her alone, and no one else has been able to wield it.
