Cheep Art Supplies! Whoo!
So, a friend of my mom's owns a little art studio where he teaches the Bob Ross method of painting. In case you haven't heard of it, that's a method based on the TV show "The Joy of Painting" with the late Bob Ross as the instructor. It teaches techniques that allow you to quickly learn how to paint realistic landscapes; however, most serious artists think of it as a kind of joke. I find the art produced by that method to be rather soul-less and generic. And it involves essentially copying the style of one artist - Bob Ross - rather than finding your own style. Still, I've considered taking a class with my mom's friend just to learn the techniques so that I could then go and apply them to my own work.
Anyway, this friend has recently had a lot of complications with his diabetes, and had to have his foot amputated, and had a serious leg infection, and was in ICU for a long time. They weren't sure he was going to make it, and now he has a long recovery ahead of him. So he's closing the studio and if he ever gets back into teaching it will probably be out of his home or something. Which means they're selling off a lot of his supplies at bargain basement prices. I feel a little guilty paying him so little for so much, as he must be taking one hell of a loss on his stuff, but he needs the money right now, and I have no more money to spend in any case.
I bought:
- 105 2-oz bottles of acrylic paint for only $0.25 each, or $26.25 total. Regular price would have been $262.50.
- Set of 60 Prismacolor pencil crayons for $25.00.
- Three charcoal pencils (2B, 4B & 6B) for a buck. Now that I'm thinking about it, I should have bought more of those...
I also bought a bottle of sealant that is specifically supposed to work on polymer clay. That was regular price though. One of the reasons I haven't made more polymer clay stuff is that the other sealant I bought before didn't work very well.
I guess this means I should do some more traditional art, eh?
