Why I don't take public fursuit commissions
8 years ago
I get a lot of comments and notes asking me if I'm open, where my prices are, and when I plan to take commissions.
The ultimate answer:
I'm not ready.
I'm not even sure if I'm interested in all honestly.
When in comes to fursuit crafts and costumes, I am definitely a hobbyist. I enjoy it in the moment but I get burned out very quickly. While I can almost guarantee a fast turnaround, I can't do two fursuit projects back to back. It's just too much work for me, especially when I can make more money way faster at my actual job: drawing. Now art is a skill that I have nurtured for 17 years so I can do art without even focusing now--and more importantly, without burnout. I don't want to resent fursuit making so I pace myself.
Another reason I don't take commissions is because I don't feel like my quality is quite there yet. Sure, there are a lot of builders who start taking commissions very early but I'm just not one of them. My work is asymmetrical, I don' completely line the inside, and I don't seem to show a great enough drive to improve to where people would feel it's worth it. I'm not saying they're HORRIBLE quality, I try to make sure all the foam is covered, good breathability, decent vision, and comfort (not too tight, nose has a place to go LOL) but I don't really think I have patience for the whole 9 yards like some better builders. I don't want people to pay me hundreds for a product others do so much better.
Lastly, I just don't have drive for designs that don't speak to me. I let this slide sometimes to do suits for people I trust (you'll see a lot of my friends buying my suits;;) but that's because I trust those people and it's really easy to make potential fixes when they live near me! I don't like the idea of doing refurbishes at a convention or all the money it costs to ship me something just for quick fixes. So I kind of stick to pre-mades for this. I feel like the design and quality if better when I want to do it!
TL;dr
It's slow money. Quality and improvement not where I want it to be. Burnuot too easily. Not enough passion for designs I don't love. I don't wanna.
Thank you all for understanding <3
