'When time passes, it carries away with it opportunities. No adult ever mentioned this to me and so I let time pass with not much care, not realizing until my mid-forties that there is a certain reality to time that is irreversible.
If there were only one thing I could give you that would change your life in a profoundly useful way, it would be to let you see clearly - as though a crystal ball - that time IS opportunity, but without purpose, opportunity will pass by merrily like a dream. Keen purpose feels better - the difference between enjoying your life immensely or meandering confused and disinterested. Cultivating yourself for a purposeful life needs big and small goals, long-term and short-term dreams.
Someday you'll be 58. This is the advice you'll want to give to a young friend.'
