Commission Protocol (Long Term Commissions)
7 years agoOK Here's my new approach to long term commissions:For the first month of the commission, I will not message the artist unless necessary - except in the event of a seasonal commission or one with an agreed deadline within the space of a month. One month after the date that the commission was made, I will attempt contact with the artist in order to find out the status of the commission. If I do not receive a reply, I will generally not attempt contact until 2 months have passed - unless, again, the commission is seasonal or has an agreed deadline.
After 3 months, I will contact the artist for an explanation as to why the art piece is still pending. In the majority of cases, a simple response letting me know how much has been done, or why the artist hasn’t been able to work on the picture, will suffice. If I do not receive reply, however, then 7 days after the first message was sent, I will attempt contact through PayPal for a refund, elevating my claim if necessary. This approach will continue until 6 months have passed.
After 6 months, I will request a refund unless adequate reasons are given for the work being so late. As PayPal only allows users to claim for payments within 180 days (about 6 months), I will begin proceedings before the 6 month mark. Any work that takes longer than 6 months must provide regular contact between myself and the artist.
Regarding Facebook artists, a reliable channel of communication must be established before any agreed commission or payment is made. A timeframe regarding the commission will be decided before work starts and artists must inform me of any delays, which in most cases should be accepted without issue. This special circumstance for Facebook is as a result of numerous problems arising during commissions through Facebook artists.
I do feel like I've become a bit harsher with this but after a recent incident where an artist just vanished off the face of the earth without any notice, I feel I have to do more to ensure I get the product I paid for.
