This is a Group for everyone, who loved the GNOME 2 interface and the continuation of it: MATE. This is not only for the users of this environment, it is for everyone, who is a fan of the old GNOME 2 interface, before they decided to switch to Gnome Shell in GNOME 3.

The MATE Desktop Environment is the continuation of GNOME 2. It provides an intuitive and attractive desktop environment using traditional metaphors for Linux and other Unix-like operating systems.

The desktop environment MATE was initiated after the GNOME desktop was updated to version 3.0 in April 2011. Since the new operating concept of the GNOME shell was dissatisfied, a fork was decided based on the predecessor version GNOME 2.32. MATE has set itself the goal of continuing the classic desktop concept of GNOME 2. It is especially used with Ubuntu-based Linux Mint in addition to Cinnamon as a standard desktop. From Ubuntu 15.04 there is an official Ubuntu version: Ubuntu MATE.
