I don't support feminism, because I am not a sexist and I do not believe in discrimination on the basis of gender.
Now that I have your attention, let me explain.
Growing up, I learned the meaning of words according to the context in which they were used, often without consulting a dictionary. The majority of my experience of feminists (either in person or through slogans, social media posts, posters, films or other media) was such that I saw very few cases where feminism was promoted through arguments in favour of equality of the sexes, but a great many which focused on demeaning and degrading the male gender or glorifying the female gender.
And so I came to understand the word feminism to mean a belief that people who are female are superior to people who are male. In other words, feminism to me was pro-female sexism.
In the interim I have looked up the word and found the dictionary definition, quoted from google here:
"Feminism (Noun) the advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes."
Now this I am fully in favour of.
But based on what I have seen and still see being said by many who call themselves feminists, I can only conclude that one or all of the following must be the case:
a.) many who call themselves feminists don't actually know what feminism means
b.) pro-female sexists are using feminism as a politically correct cover to promote and justify their belief in sexual inequality
c.) there is a deplorable state of confusion in society in general surrounding the difference between being a feminist and being a sexist
So until feminism is once again properly defined, understood and acknowledged in society in general (and specifically where our policies and social ethics are discussed and determined) and we treat sexist remarks and slogans made under the banner of feminism as harshly as we now treat other false news spread on social media, I will not support feminism or the feminist movement publicly.
If you call yourself a feminist but you do not believe in equality of the sexes and you promote feminism by degrading the male gender or promoting the female gender over the male, then please be honest with yourself and with others and stop calling yourself a feminist and instead call yourself a sexist, pro-female sexist, or if you dislike blatant honesty then approach a legal or linguistic body and apply to create a new term which means pro-female sexist, but doesn't sound quite so politically incorrect.
