All around the 5,500-person capacity concert hall rang the thunderous applause of the audience as the violinist and his orchestra performed the final bars of the old, old song Auld Lang Syne. Apart from the elderly and those unable to rise, not a person remained seated for the standing ovation. It started somewhere in the middle towards the front and before long everyone was on their feet and clapping their paws, claws and hands. As the black cat and the 60-performers strong Ludwig Von Beethoven Orchestra took their bows, from up in the gantry above the center of the hall, coloured balloons and streamers drifted and whirled down onto the peoples' heads. This was the traditional end to every concert that Rieu did. Each performance was filled with music, dancing in the aisles, fun and laughter and everybody who attended were guaranteed to thoroughly enjoy their night.
As the applause continued, the Maestro lowered his 17th century Stradivarius violin and - with a wide smile on his muzzle and eyes closing momentarily - half-bowed then straightened, still smiling from ear to ear and blew a kiss. Next, he turned to his hard-working orchestra and motioned to them so that they may receive their well-deserved acclaim.
On and on went the clapping, the audience eager to show their happiness with the show. After everyone had taken their bows, they left the stage and the hall began to empty. All of the well-dressed attendees were chatting and laughing and recalling their favourite parts.
After the concert, there was a champagne party for Maestro Rieu, all the performers and select guests, including eight fans whom had either paid for a Meet and Greet or won the opportunity in a competition. The party was to be held in a specially prepared suite at the venue. The admirers stood in a line beside Rieu's public relations assistant, nervous and excited and chatting quietly back-and-forth amongst themselves. You are one of them.
Suddenly, a side door opened and the Maestro, himself was escorted in by one of his assistants. He paused for a brief word with some of the lady members of the orchestra before striding towards where you stood. His demeanour exuded confidence and approachability and charisma. Starting with the first V.I.P., Rieu shook hands, signed the person's programme, exchanged pleasantries and they had a couple of photographs taken.
As you wait your turn at the end of the line, you take a moment to have a good look at him.
Rieu is a hybrid feline who is a cross between a leopard and a panther. Standing at 6 feet and two inches, he's rather tall for his species and his body is nicely toned as he has to be in peak condition for performing and touring the world. His short fur is mostly black with some faint golden patches showing through. The spots which cover his whole body are a darker shade of black and stand out rather prominently in some areas. His chin and sides of his noseleather were grey and the long whiskers that grew around his muzzle were all white with the odd exception of two black ones amongst those on the left side.
The swept-back fur on his head is long and wavy and reaches to the Maestro's tuxedo's collar. It is black -and-silver in colour. As he turns to the next person in line, he momentarily glances your way and his stunning blue eyes glint in the light and he smiles before turning his attention away again.
Looking down, you can see Rieu's thick-furred tail sweeping floorwards from under the tail of his tuxedo's jacket. The appendage is long (like a snow leopard's) and bears 14 spots: seven large along the top and seven smaller ones along the underside. At the tip, the tail is solid black.
Next you take in Rieu's clothing. As he has just come from the stage, the cat is still in his beautifully tailored black evening tailcoat. A snowy-white kerchief that matches his shirt peeks from the breast pocket on the left side and at the cat's throat sparkles a sapphire-studded [insert name here]. Atop the shirt and below the jacket is a black waistcoat which has a thin golden chain looping from the right pocket to the left across Rieu's stomach. His trousers are also black as are his highly-polished shoes.
You notice a sparkle from the Maestro's right paw as he takes the pen of the fan beside you and signs their programme with a flourish. You catch a brief glimpse of a golden ring that encircles the ring finger. It's a stone that is half sapphire and half emerald and when it catches the light from above, shimmers brightly.
At last it is your turn and you cannot help but inhale the strong scent of Rieu's cologne that is reasonably strong but not overpowering. He looks you right in the eye and smiles warmly. His voice when he speaks is smooth and you can hear his Dutch accent. When he shakes your hand, he says "Thank you so much for coming tonight! I hope you enjoyed yourself as much as my orchestra and I did." A short conversation follows during which the felid listens carefully and nods and encourages you to chat. Finally, he autographs your programme and you stand smiling by his side for the photographer then the cat is ushered to his table so that the party may begin properly.
