If children need to fight to not be educated for free, then that is a healthy society. If children need to fight to be educated in return for payment now or in the future, then that is not healthy and instead exploitative. If children need to fight to be educated or even learn to read, then that is a sign of oppression and the after effects tend to involve workarounds, like prayer singing because the people aren't expected to be able to read but they can memorize songs. The more workarounds to avoid a need to be educated, the worse a societies past must have been for the people whose culture includes these things. Dystopian fiction should keep this in mind, depending on how long a society has restricted the education of its people in order to control them. And that's what all this amounts to, uneducated people are easier to control and manipulate, the only government that doesn't want to educate its people for free is one that gains more by having other nations educate their immigrants, and a government that can no longer win the votes of its people with promises to have the majority pay for what the rich use in the hopes that the rich improve the nation. There are times when efficiency is needed, but it's a careful balance that needs to be maintained or else you have things like food deserts which make it difficult to keep a military presence in certain areas. Socialism has its uses, especially when it comes to creating a foothold in strategic locations and controlling the migration of the people, but educating the people on this balancing act can be a detriment to some political ideologies, which isn't a problem in a healthy society which can ignore outlier ideologies.
