My honest opinion on Pirate Express (G)
3 days agoPoseidon ruled the seas and some pirates caused him trouble. He shrunk 'em down and stuffed them in a bottle. His son Newt set 'em loose, now they're up to old tricks. Leaving Newt searching for a fix.
Pirate Express: the awesomest ship that'll ever be? Not really! But earlier this decade, I got more interested in this obscure Canadian cartoon produced by Atomic Cartoons, with its co-production partner being Australia's Sticky Pictures.
The show premiered back in 2015, but reruns were being aired here in Australia as recent as 2021. Whilst I initially wasn't that interested in Pirate Express, I came to like the show for its character design; so much that I started making fan art of the main character Newt, as well as Gordon the octopus, who I consider to be the only sane character in the entire series.
Earlier this year, I rewatched every episode of Pirate Express, dissected everything and learned a lot more. Not only was there the Pirate Express ship with La Poutine, Armando, Burt, Booli and Spewy, along with Poseidon, the god of the seas; there was also the god of wind, the cyclops, the underworld (which partly inspired the design of my goat character Chaz) and other elements. It seemed like it was all put together brilliantly. Well, I wish it was!
Now, on the show's 11th anniversary, I can honestly say what I really think about Pirate Express after all these years.
Pirate Express is the WORST CARTOON EVER!
I might have liked the character designs, but the whole show was a mess. In fact, Pirate Express was originally intended to be a Canada-France co-production, with Ellipsanime partnering with Atomic. Once more, the art style in the original pilot intro was very different from what it ultimately became. The series was produced in 2013, but didn't go to air until April 2015, when Teletoon "dumped" the entire series over 5 days, then that was it. Teletoon would not air Pirate Express in Canada again. Pirate Express would then gradually premiere in Australia and around the world. Rewatching the series earlier this year, I found a lot of errors and other things that seemed out of place. I'm not going to go through them all because I would otherwise be wasting my time, and everyone else's.
I've made plenty of Pirate Express fan art, and the hairstyle of my fursona Seth the Cat now takes its cues from Newt. But my drawing of Newt skateboarding, based on a screenshot from the original pilot intro, is going to be my last Pirate Express fan art. There are a lot of bad cartoons out there, but Pirate Express is the worst. If I had my way, Pirate Express would be erased from existence, faster than you can say Do Not Watch This Show.
