As soon as I painted his face he told me in no uncertain terms that his name was Marigold and he was going to be a new character of mine whether I liked it or not.
I said okay but he still had to wish everyone a Happy New Year.
The original idea for this was a little joke on the dozens of bird-related holiday cards I've received over the years. He's not based on any particular species but I primarily took inspiration from chickadees, sparrows, and birds of paradise. Naturally the phoenix is the symbol of rebirth, like buds in the snow, for New Years.
