Alaska's 5th largest city, with a population of 8000. One thing a lot of visitors to Ketchikan don't realize is just how long and narrow it is. 3500' mountains behind, and ocean in front doesn't leave much room for a city. While less than a half-mile wide, it stretches along the shoreline for nearly 3 miles.
It's unique here in the sense that it's on an island, so no way into or out of town unless you're on a boat or an airplane. In the case of an airplane (airliner), the airport itself is the only one in the United States that is on a separate island from the city it serves. Residents and visitors must utilize a ferry to get between town and the airport.
