I bought a farm together with my brother and a few friends, 12 years ago, with the goal of having my own cows within a few months. A lot of things did not work out as planned, however, and I ended up taking care of other people's cattle in my own pastures, every year. I had to sell the farm 6 months ago, since my brother had to sell his part, and I could not afford to buy his part.
So... now I am looking for a new farm I can afford by myself this time, to hopefully finally have my own herd to take care of. Having my own little herd, is the main goal of my life. Should hopefully not be in the too far distant future. :)

Thank you for your kind words! I also wish you the best of luck, in getting where you want to get! :)
I have several favourite breeds, so I would find it difficult to choose between all of them! I am not going to have cattle for any kind of production, just to provide them with good lives, and to graze, to help with the eco-system. :)
When I have been taking care of other people's cattle, I have been taking care of quite many breeds... but there are always so many individual personalities, and I find that the individual personality is what is the most important for me, for which cows and/or bulls I would like to have in the future. :)

I have a few favorite, they all looks gorgeous: Holstein, Hereford, Brahman, Scottish highland, zebu, watusi,... But I would be happy with every calf I can get really. I want to have all bulls, cause they aren't as valuable as cows and they don't get to live that long. I'll have them neutered, cause I don't want to get killed by a moody bull...
My dream is to have my own little herd of oxens and I want to ride them (like you ride horses), but snuggling with them also a dream come true :D

Hehe, yeah! I knew of a person who trained a bull (yes, a bull) to do show-jumping. She entered competitions together with her bull, just for fun, and they always lost, because they were slower than the horses, but they still managed to complete the course and such. :) She quit the jumping when the bull weighed more than one tonnes, because he was getting a bit too heavy for doing the jumping with a rider on his back. :)
I've taken care of a few adult bulls, and there's a really great difference in temper. Some get aggressive and dangerous, and some are extremely sweet. Those were all bulls that I did not spend a lot of time with as they grew up, but I want to try the experiment of how I can make a bull become sweet and gentle, just through the right upbringing. If I am there for them at all times, making sure they're safe and secure. If they know that they can trust you, and if you are like a parent to them... I want to see, just how they will turn out when they grow up.
But yes, some bulls are dangerous. I've been close to being injured several times, with the wrong kind of bull. But few bulls get brought up in the way that I would bring them up. :)

That's amazing! I would have loved to see that :D
If I got a bull that would get dangerous I would probably try to rehome him or... kill him, take the meat and hide so he doesn't go to waste, but I don't know if I could do that... We'll see. I rather have all sweet bulls. I wouldn't mind having cows. I will probably buy the first social calf I can find once I've got enough money and space to buy a tiny herd.
I never had cattle so it's all just a fantasy for now. I'll see how cows are when I get one or two. Too bad you don't have those typical 'How to take care of' for cows...

Hehe, well, yeah... most books of how to take care of cows has a lot to do with production of dairy or meat. There are some books which include several chapters of good cattle-care though, such as this one: http://www.amazon.com/Ethology-Dome...../dp/1845935365 I've learned a lot from experience, mainly, but I have also read a lot about cattle care. 12 years ago, I would not have known enough to take care of cattle by myself, which was one of the reasons why I bought a farm together with other people, with the intention of sharing. Now, with all the things I've learned by taking care of cattle during those years, I know I can take care of them myself.
I've got to go to bed now. It's past bedtime where I am! It was great talking to you! I will definitely see you around here, and once again: Welcome, I am pleased to meet you!
