These are nine of the twelve paintings I'm working on for this year's Yappy Hour! Yappy Hour is Lone Star's biggest fund-raiser/donation drive of the year (involving an open bar and an extensive silent auction. XD You do the math.) I was asked to make 12 paintings of animals that are at the shelter right now.
Most of the ones I've painted are "lifers." Their chances of them being adopted are slim to none due to various reasons...
1. RJ - Orange domestic short-hair.
Why his chances of adoption are so slim - Orange and black cats have the lowest adoption rates at the shelter. RJ and his sister were brought in feral, and RJ has only recently opened up; not so much his sister. Despite his new found bravery towards people, RJ is rarely given a second look.
2. Raven - White longhair with black spots
Why her chances of adoption are so slim - Not to put too fine a point on it, but chances are high that Raven hates you without ever having met you. Don't worry though, it's not just you. Raven hates everyone, including other cats. She's a very pretty girl with a personality no one can seem to find endearing.
3. Ringo - ??? Mutt.
Why his chances of adoption are so slim - Does not get along well with others. Ringo is generally find with people, but he's destined to be the single dog in any home. He also has a protective streak that makes him wary of strangers... enough so that potential adopters find him to be more intimidating than anything else.
4 & 5 . The black pit and the cat with the blue eyes are not among the ones considered 'lifers.' They are both fairly new to the shelter and their prospects look good!
6. Abby - Pit mix
Why her chances of adoption are so slim - Like Ringo, Abby does not play well with other. She would have to be an only pet, and she should not be trusted around children... but she'd be the perfect dog if you want to get rid of ground squirrels!
7. Tundra - Lab mix
Why her chances of adoption are so slim - Tundra and her brother Moses are both nippy. They cannot be legally adopted because of their biting tendencies.
8. Maghera - Maine Coon
Why her chances of adoption are so slim - Maghera doesn't know you, but she fucking hates you already, wants to kill you, and she is not about to hide her feelings. It doesn't help that she's as big and pissed off as a rabid lynx.
9. Tiger - Grey Tabby
Why his chances of adoption are so slim - Unless Tiger knows you well, chances are you'll never see him. He does not trust new people or strangers; it even still takes him several weeks to warm up to employees or volunteers that are there every day. Unfortunately, by the time Tiger warms up to a person... chances are high they've already left with a different cat.
Because Lone Star is a no-kill shelter, these animals will never be euthanized because they are "unadoptable." They will live their lives to their natural ends, getting the best food, love, and vet care that the shelter staff and volunteers can provide.

I think next time I am in the market for a cat I am going to a shelter and going to ask for who's been there the longest. :( I am pretty good with cats, and even one that her past owner thought was "evil" was able to unwind once in my household. Was still a little on the prissy side but so long as you respected her "stop touching me" warnings things were good.
I hope the ones that can still be adopted find people who can handle them and want them.

Awww shelter pets <3 I'd love to work with cats with behavioral issues, help make them more comfortable around people (and simultaneously more adoptable!) My family adopted two cats about a year and a half ago, one of which is now 19 years old (vet's estimate) and the other was a little feisty and untrusting in the beginning any time we'd try to pet her. Bunny-kicking and play-biting a little too rough. Now she adores being petted, and spends her time sashaying and princessing around She's a longhair torbie.
Raven and Tiger are my favorite of these gorgeous watercolors! I hope the fundraiser goes great!

Ringo aaaah what a cutie!
My Mum's cat Jebediah was a long term shelter resident, he had been there over a year and the staff had adopted him as the shelter pet :) Now he's a spoiled fat ball of dough!
Such a shame that some animals just don't get along with people- I guess some of us don't get on with people either haha

*laughs* Awww... one of my cats here is a cross between #2 and a #8. I totally get that personality in a cat. They're one person only cats - I adopted mine because well, we get along okay and have an understanding... but man, I've had to warn folks. Don't pet him if you want to keep that eyeball. He will go for your face and he's not fooling around. Love him, will never let him go - so there's someone out there who they might just click with at some point. I did. He's a neat cat, but he's sure not for everyone.
Besides, hey, if anyone tries to break into the house, my money's on the cat to eat them, not the dogs. ;)
Awesome project, maybe one of these guys will find their forever home because of this. <3
