And the other day I saw the most LGBT college in Oxford: Wadham. I didn't know this until I started university but on their open day I visited Wadham College and...they scared me! Really, they seemed so obsessed with having visitors see everything. But now I feel bad, they just wanted a little love.
I can attest that most of what ruffneck2112 said is right. The only problem I had was quite early on in my first year when I was getting the metro and some teenagers shouted 'fag' among other things across from the other problem, but that's relatively mild as to what could've happened. As for Newcastle Uni, they have an LGBT society, but I don't think it's very inclusive. Seems to have the generic goal of 'go out and get smashed' which I don't really do. Sucks, but most university societies are like that.
Another word for dam is dyke. Remember there is a nursery rhyme of a boy sticking his finger in a dyke.
And the term faggot means a bundle of sticks.
The term gay used to mean cheerful and happy-go-lucky. A very positive term.
Now seems these words have become twisted by society.
