Apollo sighed as he stood by one of the large tables. He always hated these large gatherings that his family had. Sure it was fun to get dressed up once in a while, wear a suit, all of that, but he never had anyone to talk to. It was always a bad sign when the average age of the party guest was probably around 55. He’d get dragged into conversations about flowers and tea, and other boring fares that didn’t concern him. For a young man in his 20’s, he’d much rather be traveling or exploring. Apollo liked walking in the forest around his family’s estate. Even now he would find new and interesting things. If it hadn’t been for his mother, Apollo would have left his home years ago.
When he was younger, Apollo’s father had left to travel on a business trip, gathering new clients and such. But something had happened to him on that trip, his mother would never talk about it. But that was the last time that he had seen his father. Apollo didn’t know what to think about all of it, and anytime that he tried to ask any questions, his mother would refuse to answer them. He didn’t blame her, he was sure that it was a sore subject to talk about, and he didn’t want to hurt her, but he was always curious. His mother’s family came from money, so even after his father had disappeared, they were well taken care of. A few years ago, his mother had decided that she didn’t like living there anymore, and she had given the house to Apollo. The family still used the place for parties such as this, but he was mostly by himself, and expected to care for the place. These parties were just so… Boring.
He wanted adventure… Well, maybe not going that far. But Apollo did want to see new places and learn about new things. He swore that he would, his younger brother would be ready to take care of things around here in a couple more years, and that’s when he would go. He’d be able to let him take care of the place while he traveled. Until then, it seemed like he would have to put up with these frivolous parties, and make small talk until the guests had gone. It seemed like this party was going to be just like all of the other ones… And that’s when he saw her.
Apollo wasn’t sure why nobody else had seen her, she was definitely one of the most beautiful women that he had ever seen. She was dressed in a pure white suit, and had long hair that was the same color. If the white hair wasn’t odd enough, she had what looked like rabbit ears on her head. They had held costume parties here before, but that certainly wasn’t going on today. Apollo wondered whether she had made a mistake or something. The girl was looking at a pocket watch, a nervous look in her eyes. Apollo tried to walk over, wanting to say something to her, but when he took a couple of steps, the girl quickly walked away. He wasn’t offended, he didn’t think that she was trying to get away from him, in fact, it didn’t seem like she had noticed him at all. But he couldn’t just let her walk away, he was far too intrigued to let that happen. So as he saw her walk into the woods, Apollo cast a glance back, seeing that nobody would notice if he was gone, and followed after her.
Apollo didn’t expect that she would be as quick as she was. He had always been careful when he walked around here, not wanting to trip over a root or something. But the girl he was following was fast, not even looking at the ground as she sped through the trees and bushes. Though he wouldn’t have admitted it to anyone, Apollo was having a hard time keeping up. Thankfully, it seemed as though she was slowing down. She walked through a bunch of bushes, and Apollo carefully followed after her, trying not to alert her to his presence.
He poked his head through the bushes, and watched her standing there in front of a large tree. As she waved a hand, a door appeared out of nowhere. Apollo couldn’t help but let out a gasp, making the girl jump when she heard it. She turned, her eyes wide with fright, and she finally saw him. “Who are you? Why did you follow me? Oh I don’t have time for this… I’m already late as it is…” She shuffled nervously. Her eyes seemed full of questions, but it seemed like there was a bit of fear there as well. “Please just forget what you saw. You shouldn’t be here, no mortal should.” Apollo opened his mouth to ask her what she had meant by that, but before he could, she had already opened the door and gone through it.
Apollo walked out from the bushes, wondering if everything he saw had been a dream. He rubbed his eyes, blinking a few times, but the door was still there. He reached out a hand, and touched it, the wooden door felt warm. He carefully opened it, and took a peek inside… But there was nothing there. At least, nothing that he could see. It was entirely pitch black, as if she had stepped into darkness itself. The thought of entering that door made his stomach feel like it was twisting itself into a knot, but there was also a part of him that was curious to know what was beyond that darkness. “Hello?” He called out, but there was no answer.
Apollo looked around again. He was all by himself in the middle of the woods, some random door in front of him. It would be easy enough to find his way back, but did he really want to go back? Back to that boring party, with all of the boring people talking about boring things? This seemed like it would be a whole lot more interesting. “Well alright then, I’ll just go inside, explore a bit, and then come right back. It’s not like it could be dangerous or anything, and I won’t be gone all that long. They won’t even notice that I’ve gone anywhere.” He talked out loud to himself, strengthening his resolve. He took a deep breath, opened the door, and took a step inside.
Only his foot never set down anywhere. There was nothing to put it down on. Apollo flailed out his arms, trying to catch the frame of the door, but there was nothing there to grab on to. He looked back as he fell, the door had somehow disappeared. Apollo screamed as he felt himself falling into the nothingness, closing his eyes, and wondering to himself what he was going to fall on. Was this the end for him? Had he done something so stupid that now he was going to die? He wasn’t sure… He just knew that girl had come through here as well, and she seemed to know what she was doing. Had she fallen through here as well?
He kept falling for what seemed like hours, maybe even days. For all he knew it was only minutes. Time just seemed to be crawling by as he fell farther and farther down. That was when he felt something touching his leg. Though he couldn’t see anything, it felt like a hand was touching his leg. Apollo tried to pull his leg back and away. “Is someone there?” His voice seemed to echo all around him, and he felt something on his shoulder this time. He twisted his body, trying to see, trying to reach out and grab onto something. That was when he felt them, It suddenly felt like hundreds of hands were touching his body, grabbing his hair, tugging at his clothes. As much as Apollo tried to fight them off, they held him there, and he felt his clothes being ripped off of him, blushing as he felt the hands begin to touch his bare body. “S-Stop it! Leave me alone!” He cried out, but they didn’t stop. His body felt strange, an odd sensation running through him. Apollo’s mind couldn’t handle anymore of this, and he lost consciousness
Apollo woke up moaning, his head pounding. He groaned, and sat up, opening his eyes, and then quickly squinting them as the sunlight shone brightly down on him. The last thing that he remembered was chasing after that girl… A door in the woods, and then falling. Something was tickling his shoulders, and as he put his hand back, he felt something weird. He brushed his hair through his fingers, what had been short brown hair now reached his shoulders. His eyes went wide, and as he pulled it up to look, he could see the long hair, what looked like a mix of blue and white in color. He shot up quickly, tripping and falling down as he stepped on a length of fabric. He looked down and saw that someone had put him in a dress! “This is insane!” He yelled… And that’s when he stopped. That wasn’t his voice, that wasn’t even a MALE voice.
He looked around, and saw a lake close to where he was laying. He ran over to it, and looked down at the calm surface, to look at his reflection. He couldn’t make a noise. His mouth was gone, replaced by what looked like a beak. He didn’t know how he hadn’t noticed, but his body was covered in feathers. That’s when he noticed the odd, heavy feeling on his chest. He brought his hands up to his chest, but he didn’t want to touch them. “I…I’m a girl. I’m a bird… And I’m a girl?!” It took everything he had not to pass out again, but he sat down, taking deep breaths. “Okay… This has to be a dream right? I mean… How would this sort of thing happen? There would never be a door in the woods, that doesn’t even make sense. I probably just fell asleep at the party.” He nodded. He reached down and pinched his arm, then let out a shout. “Ouch! Oh no… You cant feel pain in dreams.. So this isn’t a dream?!”
He stood up and looked around, and that’s when he noticed where he was. Apollo was surrounded by large mushrooms, small trees, and the grass was almost a bluish color. Everything seemed so bright, and it certainly wasn’t the same forest that he had been in before all of this had happened. He crossed his arms, and then quickly uncrossed them, blushing when he had felt his new breasts. “Okay… I just need to find someone around here who can explain all of this… And tell me where the hell I am…” He sighed.
