This is one of four pieces I did as individual studies of the girls from Move to the Music! First up is the one of the group who actually uses her real name on stage Melody Atherton. She is the lead singer and is also the main song writer and band leader. She grew up in a music oriented family with her mother being a well known studio singer and songwriter and her father taught music history at a local university. While she could have followed her mother's path Melody wanted to perform in front of an audience, and not just a mouse audience but a bigum crowd. This decision would end up putting her on the path she is on now.Her hobbies are tai chi, yoga, gardening, reading, going to museums, dancing and singing. Image size about 9"x 12" medium color pencil with some marker, gouache and micron pen.

Well, when Move to the Music originally started promoting themselves they were compared to various different female acts. Initially the record label promoted the girls as being another Spice Girls type group that would appeal to the high school female audience. Melody were more than happy to play that role while quietly inserting some real content into their album. When it their sales of CD's and iTunes started going gold and platinum they began to insert more and more influence over how their next album would be handled. Very much how Madonna has built much of her influence in the industry.
Yeah she is. Each member of the band members has a carefully crafted stage presence that fortunately for them is also rather close to their real personailties. Melody is the sophisticated upscale lady who is often presented a sexy bombshell. Harmony is the intelligent, sexy, girl with glass type. Rhythm is the happy bouncy teeny-bopper good girl; while Beat is the tough blue-collar bad girl. This has given them a rather diverse base of fans, both female and male.
Well Janet, Rhythm, doesn't do any, she's exclusively aerobics and dance. The others got involved for different reasons. Melody got into Tai chi and yoga in college to help herself stay in shape and she found it helped with coordinating her mind and body when dancing. Isabella, Harmony, specifically picked up Kung-fu, in particular the staff, when she came to the realization that her stage controller was going to be a staff-like object. so she figured I might as well look like I know how carry this thing. Brandy, Beat, was originally into boxing as a child. The best way she knew of getting respect from her brothers. She moved to Wing Chun when she discovered Bruce Lee films and thought it looked cool!
