I keep rabbits. I have some very good quality breeding-stock Champagne D'Argents...this is my herdsire, Boss (registered name: Jake's Houdini). He's a bit old, and no longer knows how to pose for a show...I never intended to show him when I bought him, I just wanted a good sire for future Champagnes.
Well this past weekend I was convinced to bring him to a show, and the intention was to "pad the numbers" a little. See, the more rabbits that a rabbit beats at a show, the more points they get. Champagnes are a pretty rare "heritage" breed, so there's never very many on the judge's table around here. So I dutifully packed up my old buck and lugged him to the show.
Turns out that in the second show of the day (they ran two shows concurrently) he was the only entry. Now...it isn't uncommon for a judge to withhold "Best Of Breed" awards if there's only one rabbit. However they CAN award it if they feel that the lone entry is worthy.
The judge LOVED Boss. Kept saying "beautiful, just beautiful" under his breath. Said he has an excellent midsection, a perfect butterfly mark on his face, and has IDEAL depth of color. To my surprise, when he was finished evaluating Boss, he declared "Yep, this is our Best of Breed!"
So my "washed up" and "old" buck was worthy of an award!!! :) Tell you what, his chunky retired arse is getting dragged to a lot more shows from now on, LOL!!!
Here he is with his blue BOB ribbon and the yellow "evaluation" slip. :) Ignore the bottle of hand sanitizer, lol. Another one of the rabbits had an issue and I wanted clean hands. ;)
This photo was taken by a friend but I have permission to do what I wants with it. ;)

LOL gray hair. ;)
Yes a LOT cheaper...my whole herd usually costs me less than $10 a month in feed and stuff. This month they're a little more expensive...had to get penicillin and hypodermic needles for a doe with an infection. Siiigh.
BUT STILL, much more within my budget. :P I sha'n't have another horse for a few years. :(

I dislike cold when it is more than 30 degrees below zero. ;) I won't hunt in anything colder than 20 below any more...last time I did a hunt when it was ass-cold, it was 40 below and I frostbit the hell out of the bottoms of my feet. My poor feets will never be the same. :P
It was a couple of years ago. My feet are still ridiculously stupid about cold...like if the shower isn't at juuuust the right temperature the frostbitten spots hurt like hell. I can't let my feet get cold, because it is so painful. :P
Year ago I did my first 70-degree hunt. Light jacket and jeans. NOW THAT'S AWESOME. No more of this freezing crap!!!!

That's awesome!!! Our old boys still got it!!! ;)
I was talking to one of the judges at the show and he told me that sometimes the has-beens can really shake things up, he reminded me that the rabbit is judged on the day and if they are having a perfect day, anything can happen. :)
Though alas, the rabbit I actually EXPECTED good things from got DQ'd for a vent infection She's the blue Mini Rex I posted...she's gone BOV before for her breeder, would have FOR SURE been BOV at the show had she not been DQ'd (seriously, all the other blues looked vastly inferior. SO ANGRY!!!). Just goes to show that even the best rabbits have a bad day now and again!!! :P
OMG JERSEY WOOLIES. If I didn't have my French Angoras, I'd get a Jersey Wooly or three. I've considered eventually phasing out my Angoras in favor of the Jersey Woolies but I'm too in love with the fiber. FAngora wool is sooooo nice. :) I have cut my herd of FAngoras back to like...one doe though, LOL. I'msobad. :P

Hey, you can always beef up your numbers later, they ARE rabbits after all. ;) I recently cut back on my French Angoras, down to just the one doe. I can't give her up she's a fucking riot. :) I'll eventually have more again but for now I've got a lot on my plate, LOL!!!!!
LOL, my FAngora doe, Nosey, lives up to her name...she is the bravest, most curious rabbit, gets into anything and everything...plus she has a horribly scarred nose. Her last owner gave her away for free because she's "crazy"...also because she has a terrible track record as a breeding doe. Tends to stomp her kits into hamburger. Once I am ready to expand my FAngora herd again, I'll breed her to a nice buck, and the INSTANT she kindles, I'll foster her kits to some other doe, LOL!!! But miss Nosey is here to stay, she's one-of-a-kind. I'm not sure what color she is, either...I bought her as a wooler and nobody I know can figure her out. :P
Uhm....crap you know I don't??? LOL I'll take some photos tomorrow when it is light outside. You'll have to excuse her coat, she's in desperate need of being harvested but it's so frakking cold here I can't bring myself to strip her naked yet. She looks ridiculous. ;)
Thanks!!! :) I'm super-proud of him...I knew he was a show rabbit in his day (loooong before I bought him) and I really only wanted show-babies from him...now I'm thinking he has a few more shows left, LOL!!!
Lionheads are adorable!!! I love their manes. :) I really think they will be ARBA accepted soon...I know they've got the COD going and there were Lionheads being shown at the show where Boss took BOB. I know it'll make a lot of people happy...I mean they're recognised in the UK, already, why not here???
And poop about no shows near you...maybe carpool?

Oh I so dearly love blue eyed whites...one of my Mini Rex does is a BEW, I just bred her to my buck a few days ago. :) I know their litter will be 100% mismarked, but...if I hold back the best buck kit, he'll be the start of my BEW program. ;) I know that vienna marked Mini Rex are "unshowable" but they are freakin' cute, too. ;)
I love my ARBA membership...the book they send you and the magazine they put out is TOTALLY worth it!!!! :D LOVE the magazine. :)

Thanks!!! :) Yep, I'm a member of the ARBA, got a registered rabbitry (the Heathertoft Rabbitry) and everything...Champagne D'Argents, Mini Rex and one last French Angora...I'll have more Angoras after I graduate, lol, but they are too high maitenance for college. ;)
