Manticore and Sphinx Sketch
I have a working theory that manticores and sphinxes may actually be the same species. You don't really see male sphinxes, or female manticores, and they are both pretty much human-headed lions, with variations of the tail and wings(if present). And hey, they're fantasy creatures, so I can go with it. So these two are about to make some mantikittens! :D

Your theory is, in fact, correct! :D It's just really, really rare for someone to actually know. But it's an easy theory to come up with isn't it?
The males are Manticores because their job is to be the intimidating protector, thus the scorpion tail and dragon wings. The females, the sphinx, on the other hand, while capable of being equally vicious if they need, are far more well known for being mysterious and somewhat prophetic. and far more aproachable by strangers. which is why they have the much tamer look of being a human headed lion with feathered wings.
