I find that my sketchbooks don't last long enough for me to bother with customization. The most I'll do is slap a sticker on it(the "Macbook" cover is still on display in my studio, though). There was one time that I printed out one of my pictures and my url, but I was at a festival and wanted to advertise my comics. Also, I never show off my sketchbooks because all the good pages get torn out immediately so I can scan them and possibly display them somewhere.
If I had a refillable sketchbook, I'd customize the hell out of it.

Hmm . . .my only question: since the varnish coat on the surface of the cover is intended to make the book water-resistant, what will you do about protecting the parts of the cover you’ve removed? One drop and it’ll swell like a zit. . . .

I plan to do two things:
One, don't get it wet.
Two, don't feed it after midnight.
Er, I mean, hit it with sealant.

Sealant is a good choice.

Just knowing what sorts of things are going to wind up in there and the glamorous, upstanding individuals who are going to handle it, waterproofing is probably a smart way to go...

This sketchbook survived FC very well, despite the rain. And now it has porn in it!
