Alright, so back when I submited that Spike and Scorpan picture, I mentioned that in my MLP-verse/headcanon Scorpan was not a human but rather belonged to this beast/gargoyle-like race that lived alongside the dragons.
Since then I decided to toy with this concept a little and expand it by trying to come up with all the different designs for the possible members of Scorpan's race. And here's the outcome of that little thought experiment. This is the first batch of the sketches that I did - I also have a second part featuring the newer ones, that's ready to be upload it, though I'm not sure if I'm gonna upload it now since I'm quite tired right now... I've meant to upload this sketchdump much, much sooner but unfortunatelly couldn't get around to it for some reason...
Most of the guys (I really need to come up with a name for them ASAP) featured here are just a bunch of random characters with no names or distinguishable personalities, although I admit that after coming up with those designs, I kind of grew fond of them, so much so that I actually started to work on them as individual characters: trying to come up with personalities and backstories for them etc. For this set it would be the shy dude, the guy with the eye-patch and the pissed off old guy with a blind eye.
As for the whole creation process, I must say that it was a real fun challenge: the trickiest part was trying to figure out what the females and the kids of the species might look like, but even that didn't prove to be all too difficult. And in case you were wondering my major source of inspiration for these guys were mostly the Disney's gargoyles, the Na'vi (yeah I like "Avatar", so...?) and Weta Workshop's design for the dwarf in "The Hobbit".
All in all, I like how they turned out: there are still a few things I need to work on, and I'm also still in the process of trying to come up with some of the characteristics for this particular race (yeah, I know it's a little too complicated, especially since we're talking about characters that occupy the world of colorful ponies, but I can't help it really... I'm a real geek when it comes to world building and character development ) - I might even create a separate chart describing all the characteristics of this race.
