These were started where else but Southern California in the 60's and stayed popular until the early 80's. I still remember seeing those wild machines running around the city with that huge exhaust pipe sticking straight of off the engine. And the engine pretty much completely exposed. I always said that I wanted one myself but like all popular automotive fads it went away long before I started driving.
It's cool to relive a little childhood by seeing this at the show. Which was taken at the 2013 World of wheels in Kansas City.

nice, as much as i like standard (well as far as bodywork goes) beetles, id love to build a baja bug
they used to be really popular in the UK in the 80's and 90's but unlike in America they have fallen out of favor, and sadly its all but impossible to buy the kits and VW off road accessories in the uk these days, (certainly good quality ones) plus importing big parts like that from America is prohibitively expensive :(
