I've been ill for a week and today is the first day I've been able to sit up for any lenght of time. Trying to get back to drawing again and did this as a sort of warm up. Feeling very meh about it. I tried a different black paper to improve the quality of the scans, but not sure that worked either. Meh.

The one I used for this has smoother surface, so it's ideal for the short fur of horses. I suspect it would be less good for longer fur, eg wolves, but we'll have to see. I'm just generally frustrated by my scanner, which seems to really hate black paper, particularly when I'm doing monochrome stuff.
Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by side shade? Basically, a lot of the shading is done by doing a very faint layer of colour and then adding emphasis to the highlighted bits. I will eventually get around to doing digital stuff as well, but I've been so caught up in my recent improvements in traditional media that I have rather neglected my tablet.
Ah, I see! No, I very rarely use that way of shading. I've learned to control the pressure/colour well enough using the pencil upright. I've dabbled in digital art thinking 'how hard can it be'. It's hard. It's so very hard. I don't think I'll be submitting anything done digitally any time soon.
Ahhh ok! I was curious as I have seen people shade short fur in that way so thought I would ask :) I am still learning the technique of hair/fur lol. Haha yes it is tough especially photoshop XD I do know of a few good tutorials that I have saved throughout my dabbling I can share with you sometime if you like! Lol well practice makes perfect! I offered a couple of freebies as practice lol. Not many say no to free art.
I like to vary the angle of the pencil depending on how much detail I'm after. Using the flatter sides also has the added bonus of sharpening the pencil during the colouring, which makes them last longer. Although considering how much monochrome work I've been doing recently, I need to make a trip to London to replace my cool grey I pencil soon anyway.
I would love to get recommendations of Photoshop tutorials as they tend to be very helpful. In my case though, the next thing I need to do re digital art is just to put in the hours to practise and practise. ^_^

Thanks! And I so agree! The only reason I'm online and so very productive at the moment is because I'm off sick this week. It's great for art, sucks otherwise. And I'll have to wait until next week before I can upload my A3 drawings, since I need the scanner at work.
