Dear Diary,
It wasn't just the mead! Aela really does have a thing for tweaking my ears with her fingers - or preferably teeth if the chance arises! Are all human women this bitey? It's like every time she wants to get my attention she sneaks up and growls down my ear.
Anyhoo... looong day today. First off, I got to talking with a priestess who works at the temple nearby. She was lovely - she gave me some clothes! Ok, second hand from the charity bag, but god dammit I have so missed having pants! No more worrying about bending over near the wrong people.
And she even showed me how to use a basic restoration spell! Joy! I have never gotten anything like that to work before! Right after that, I found out Aela needed to go on a trip to the southeast, near a place called Riften, and frankly since nobody else here has been very nice to me, I asked if I could tag along. She said yes!
Journey was... fun. If you think a 13 hour walk is entertaining. Ok the first hour along the river was quite nice, but after that my feet were really hurting. Took a couple of breaks on the way and Aela tried to teach me how to shoot a bow. You'd be surprised how hard it is, but I got us a rabbit for lunch in the end! At least I think I got it... we both fired at the same time, Aela credited me...
As for Riften... is it just my imagination, or is that a town built around a big open sewer? Ugh. What a stink. And the cheeky swine gate guard had the nerve to try to shake us down before they'd let us in! What the hell is with these people? Aela aimed an arrow at his knee and he suddenly remembered that the entry tax had been removed just last week. Wish I had the guts to try that...
Aela's business was a little outside of town so were were going to walk right on through; but we didn't get that far because a vampire jumped us. Yeah, I know, vampire, middle of town, etc; but I can't explain it either. He was pretty scary looking and every else was running away screaming and to be honest I just hid behind a barrel and tried to use that healing spell I'd learned earlier, hoping I might help Aela out... I could see it wasn't going well though. Thought we were done for, when all of a sudden this big blonde woman in armour appears out of an alley and takes that vamp's head right off with her warhammer - what a hero! Her name's Mjoll, and I think she's the local vigilante. Not that I approve of vigilantism, but since the guards had all run off, I'll confess I was grateful.
I'd had a chance to gather some nice herbs and flowers en-route, so I traded them in for a little coin at the local herbalists. The apprentice there says if I can find her thirty more nirnroot, she'll pay me good - must remember not to use it for toilet paper again! Anyway, bought Mjoll a thank-you dinner with the money. She seems kind of fed up with Riften. She wants it to be a better place, but I don't think she knows how to change it. I joked we could always use an extra person to help out in Whiterun, but Mjoll looked at me seriously and said she'd think about it.
Anyway, Aela and me are staying in the inn here tonight, then it's back to business in the morning. I should probably ask what that is. Broken Helm Hollow she said - sounds more like a cave than a shop or a farm, wonder what she's up to? Oh well, I guess I'll find out. If we can survive a vampire, we can handle anything!
Yours,
Katia Bowman
I realised that on master level, with so many difficulty increasing mods, the line between the player as party leader, and companions as followers gets blurred. You spend a lot of time hiding behind them or the scenery, popping out to take potshots and throw healing spells at them. Also discovered that somewhere in my pile of mods is something that adds a size difference to the varied races, and that my female khajiit is half a head shorter than everyone else. My inner RP narrative was delighted. And there are reasons for casting Aela as a bit on the bitey side, but I won't go into them just yet :3
Notable mods I'm playing with that lead to situations like the above...
Gender and Race heights
Difficulty modifier
Deadly Dragons
Duel Combat Realism
Amazing Follower Tweaks
Bandolier - Bags and Pouches

Okay, This is really well-thought-out and well-written, but can you please explain to me why Aela is in Leather Armor with a Stormcloak Officer helmet, while Mjoll is in freaking NORDIC CARVED? And is that the Shield of Ysgramor? Shouldn't Aela be using that, as Mjoll is better with two handed weaponry and Aela, besides being an awesome archer, is better at sword and board.
Also, I think UFO is better than AFT, but I am very glad that you're using Bandolier Bags and Pouches, it's a great mod. And I had seen that Gender and Race heights mod; would you recommend it? Currently I'm using RaceMenu to alter the height of my character, but I might want to try that out for a future playthrough.

Having realised that the community is divided over them, I tried both UFO and AFT actually :) A couple of things swayed me into the latter in the end...
1) followers no longer set off traps, which means they no longer kill me with traps I already sneaked past. It never felt fair that I was punished for their poor AI!
2) catch up on weapon draw! Given that I struggle to keep 1 follower behind me, managing 2-4 became extraordinarily hard. Now they teleport to me if combat starts and they're stuck on a twig a mile away.
3) seemed less buggy. UFO gave me some odd behaviours, AFT less.
4) AFT obeys the simple rule of uninstallation... UFO was a pain to remove, and that made me doubt the mod author a bit.
As for the armour... artistic license! Also because my actual game is rather ahead of the diaries. And it always seemed odd that Mjoll's Grimsever sword is a single hander while she's skilled for two-handed - so AFT to the rescue, I retrained her into a tank :) Helmets cuz... well I think they're taking the mick out of my character tbh ¬_¬

Hmm. I tried AFT when I wanted my follower to transform into a werewolf, but it had too many options and was unimmersive. UFO is sorta a pain to uninstall, but working with source code is tricky, and Skyrim's saves are really, really easy to corrupt. I'd feel less comfortable if such complex mods told me to just uninstall them normally, because I've had some really bad experiences with savegamebloat and, more recently, chronic script latency. But I'll check out AFT on my next playthrough. Also there's another mod that also stops followers from setting off traps- the tile/pad traps, at any rate; I don't know of any mod that stops followers from setting off tripwires, unless AFT does that?
Oh, and http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/20594
I understand the artistic license bit, but if Mjoll is in Nordic Carved, then shouldn't Aela be in Chitin or Light Stalhrim or something?

I tend to see tripwires and trigger them with an arrow, so that's not so bad :) Worse were those floor plates with the spiked doors - those can 1 shot you on highest difficulty, and it's an arse when you carefully tiptoe past it only to have your follower/dog come clumbering after you and set it off.
And I just prefer her in leather :P

Hahaha, that's fair, I guess. Have you put her in Nightingale Armor yet?

Hehe, no probs :)
Steam workshop and Nexus are both great mod sources - I tend to just browse the top 50 of each and choose the ones I like. Most of mine are graphical enhancements, but a few are nice gameplay tweaks that generally fix the things that Bethesda forgot ^^

Sometimes it's the small stuff that makes the difference :) Bandolier is nice just because you stop having to micromanage your inventory. My current character is heavily into alchemy, and commonly carries 150 units worth of ingredients and potions - it's not funny to make me juggle that with armour, weapons, and dragon bones!
If you haven't got them already, these are some of my favourite mods that I don't think I can live without anymore. None of them are graphically demanding so should run fine even on older hardware:
Treebalance: Speech + Mercy (stop being a murderer!)
Unread Books Glow + Improved Skill Books
Unequip Arrows
RNG guards
Ma'isha the khajiit orphan because she's adorable. I bought Hearthfire purely to get her :3
Magic Scaling
Realistic Ragdolls
Enchantment Cleanser
Bound Weapons for All (alternatively expanded bound weapons)
More plants
Enhanced high level gameplay
Run for your lives!
Drink eat sleep bathe (stops me piling up a million tonnes of cabbages; now I cook and eat)
Naturalistic Werewolves
More dragon loot
And a very important "little thing" that was a blocker for my conscientious character: The Parthanax Fix :)
There's about 50 more that I use, but all are either texture packs, graphics updates, new player homes, or small things like these ^^

Ooo. These are all really cool actually. Already have the unread books glow, but I've been looking for a bound weapons mod since I just started using them for the first time this playthrough. And so many others of these look good. Just installed 4, probably will add more. XD
As for the ones I've been playing with, mostly I've been grabbing things that just fix what I feel is broken. Like Bandolier and such. The main ones I recommend are:
Build your own home because it did Hearthfire before Hearthfire was a thing. And I don't actually have Hearthfire yet. XD
Stones of Barenziah Quest Markers because it's just maddening to find them all otherwise.
Spend Dragon Souls For Perks cause I don't like how few perks you get, as I tend to use several different fighting styles with each character. You're no longer limited to maxing out everything to get the perks you want. This variation of this idea is actually really balanced from my experience.
And then last but not least Leveled Items can level up cause I don't like having to hold off to get the leveled items till later on.
I'm definitely gonna have some fun with some of the ones you've listed here though.

I've not completed Dragonborn yet, but I've run through Dawnguard and have one of the Hearthfire houses.
Dawnguard is good - it's well scripted and integrates with the main quest line. If you're starting over, you find you're seeking more than one elder scroll and you progress along both quests together for a while. I think I let myself down a bit by following the prescribed route too closely though... I had some radiant quests during it, but they appear to have gone away once the main line was finished.
Dragonborn is a bit... odder. Off you go to a new island, and it's less, well, free. There's a clear chain of quests, and having wandered most of the land area, I've only found a single instance of something you can stumble across and get into. No mines, no caves, nada - only the specific quest locations. Still, if you just follow that quest line then it's a good addition because it's quite varied and plot heavy.
Hearthfire... just get this and never look back :>
