Fullmetal Furs Chapter 5: The War of Ishval
"Gōwan...no Renkinjutsusji...?!" Tex asked, completely stunned at the foxcoon's display of raw strength. "That's right." Kawaii replied, pointing the golden sword at the dragon. "How lucky...all of you, coming to me like lambs to the slaughterhouse...must be a miracle of sorts. Now I don't have to go through the trouble of looking for you." Tex stated, raising his right arm in preparation for an attack. "Lambs, huh? Can a lamb do this?" Kawaii taunted, before impaling the ground in front of him with his golden sword. Immediately, arcs of golden energy sparked through the street, transmuting large, stone spikes that jutted out of the ground towards the dragon.
Tex barely managed to avoid getting impaled; dodging whatever spikes he could, and the ones he couldn't dodge were simply destroyed by his right hand. "Major Kawaii!! You're destroying the streets!" Shouted Havok, one of the Colonel's best soldiers "I'm not destroying anything!! I'm creating! Destruction is creation! They're two sides of the same coin; for to create, you must destroy something else! But you're not an alchemist, so you probably don't get it...isn't that right, Tex?" Kawaii asked, glaring over to the dragon, who merely flicked his tail in reply.
"Wait, so you mean...he's an alchemist too?!" Ryan asked in surprise, making J nod his head. "That's right...there are three steps to alchemy: analysis, decomposition, and reconstruction. But that guy, he just stops at the decomposition part!" the wolf replied, holding his right shoulder in discomfort. Kawaii and Tex charged at each other, locked in mortal combat, each of them narrowly avoiding the other's attacks. "Wait a minute...if he's an alchemist too, then why is he trying to kill off the rest of us?" J asked, watching the fight. "And how come he only goes after the ones who are state certified...?" Ryan added on to the confusion.
Kawaii and Tex continued evading each other's blows, until the latter made a grave error; he had backed himself into a wall. "Gotcha!" Kawaii shouted, as he swung his sword in for the kill. However, by now, Tex had enough time to observe the foxcoon's fighting style, and instantly thought of a way to win. "He's really strong...but his attacks are wide, and he leaves himself open for a split second before he can attack...!" Tex thought, as he ducked slightly, and raised his right paw, which was already emitting red energy, toward the foxcoon's chest. "Gotcha!"
Just before either of the attacks could connect, Kawaii suddenly jumped backwards, putting a few feet of distance between them. "What's going on?! Why did he just--" Tex thought, before he noticed something out of the corner of his eye. The dragon quickly ducked, as a lead ball shot through the air where his head would've been. "Damn, he's quick...!" Hawkeye muttered, as she reloaded her rifle and shot several more bullets toward the dragon. The sound of bullets pierced the air several more times, until the sound of a loud CRACK was heard after the last bullet.
"Did you hit him?!" Ryan asked his lieutenant, who threw the empty gun cartridge on the ground. "No...he's too fast. The only thing I hit was the side of his sunglasses." she replied, as the dragon threw his shattered glasses to the ground, revealing rich, forest green eyes, much to the shock of the military furs. "Green eyes and black scales...you're an Ishvalan?!!" Ryan gasped, as Tex stared him down from a distance. "Hmm...maybe there are too many of you to take down right now...it pains me to say it...but you'll have to receive your judgment some other day...!" Tex roared, as he slammed his right paw onto the ground beneath him, destroying the street and leaving a large, open crater into the sewers below.
"Don't go after him, guys! It's too dangerous!" Colonel Ryan ordered, receiving no objection from anyone. "Sorry about that, Kawaii...and you gave us enough time to set up the shot too..." Ryan began to say, before the foxcoon shook his head. "I wasn't buying time; it was all I could do to stay alive." Kawaii replied, putting his sword in its sheath on his back. "AXEL!!" J shouted, turning everyone's attention to the blue wolf trying to lift the rubble off of his brother with his one arm. Major Kawaii rushed over, and with a swing of his sword, reduced all the rubble covering the tiger to pebbles and dust. "Axel!! Say something!! Axel!" J scooped up his unmoving brother, and quickly placed his ear to the tiger's chest and listened to see if he could hear if the cub was even breathing.
However, after a few moments, the tiger coughed up a few lung-fulls of dust, and blinked his eyes half open. "...big bwo... Is that you?" Axel asked, half conscious. "Axel! Are you okay?! Anything hurt?" J asked, worried for his sibling. "My foot feels tingly...but I think it's fine." Axel replied, as J carefully placed him on the ground. However, as soon as the tiger tried to take a step with his right leg, he collapsed to the ground, clutching his ankle in pain. "Lil bro!" J shouted, lifting the tiger up again. "My ankle!! I...I think it's broken...!" Axel cried out in agony. Before J could do anything for his brother, he was easily lifted up by the Major, who placed the two in a military car that rushed the two back to the Military HQ.
Once they were back at HQ, Axel and J were quickly escorted inside the building, and rushed to the infirmary. "Nurse!! We have an emergency here!" The escort shouted, as a brown female bunny dressed in white ran into the room. "Oh my goodness, what happened?!" She asked, as she saw the two battered furs. "There was an incident in the city--" "Nevermind that right now! Can you help my brother?!" J interrupted, holding Axel in his arm, who was whimpering softly in pain. "Yes, I believe I can help...I just need to get you the proper paperwork first!" The nurse replied, rushing out of the room and back into her office.
J was dumbfounded. "Paperwork...?! You left a patient, who's in pain, to get paperwork?! What kind of doctor--ahh nevermind...!" The wolf mumbled, laying his brother down on one of the patient's beds. "Lil bro, listen to me. I know you're in a lot of pain, but I need you to tell me where it hurts, okay?" J asked in a soothing, yet hasty tone. Without opening his eyes, Axel pointed down to his foot. "...my ankle...it's my ankle..." the tiger mumbled softly. As soon as Axel spoke, J turned around and searched through every cabinet in the room, until he had everything he needed: painkillers, plaster wrap, a bottle of water, and a rag.
J poured a small amount of the painkiller in a dropper, and stuck the end of it in the cub's maw. "Drink this lil bro; it'll make the pain go away." J said, as he squeezed the dropper. Axel tasted the medicine, and wanted to spit it out with all his heart, but knew that his brother didn't like it when his patients didn't listen, and swallowed. "Bleh...tastes yucky..." he complained. "I know, but it'll make you feel better really quick, I promise." J replied, as he unraveled some of the plaster wrap and began to wrap the tiger's foot. After a few moments, the wolf had wrapped the entirety of Axel's right foot from the ankle down, then poured a bit of water onto the rag and set the wet rag onto the wrap, hardening it into a cast.
"Alright baby bro, you didn't break your ankle, you just sprained it, but I put a cast on it anyway to make sure you don't move it too much. The pain medicine I gave you should be kicking in soon too, so you might get a bit sleep--oh." J said, looking down to the cub, who was already sleeping peacefully. The wolf breathed a small sigh of relief, just as the nurse came back into the room. "Okay, here's all the forms; just sign these and I can begin treatment." She said, before noticing the cast on the tiger's foot. "Err...who...how...?" She stammered in confusion, while J took the papers from her. "Thanks for the help." He said sarcastically, awkwardly signing the papers with his left paw, then carrying the sleepy cub out of the room.
J began to walk back to the dorms, but on the way passed the colonel's room, which had all of their disheveled allies inside. "Hey J, hang on a minute." Colonel Ryan said, motioning for him to enter. "Colonel...do you mind explaining what the hell is going on...?! Who was that guy?! And why was he trying to kill us?!" The wolf asked, making Ryan walk to the window and gaze out at the rainy city. "Well, there's kinda a long story behind that..."
The Ishvalans are--were a race of dragons from the east. Due to their differences, they'd always been in conflict with the central government...but about thirteen years ago, a war broke out when a soldier accidentally shot and killed an Ishvalan child. During that war, we State Alchemists were called in as 'living weapons', and carried out the Fürher's final order: the complete annihilation of Ishval..."
“I was one of those alchemists. So in a sense, there is a bit of justice to his actions...” Colonel Ryan finished, turning from the rainy window to face the blue wolf, who shook his head. “That’s not justice. He’s just taking out his hatred on innocent people who had nothing to do with Ishval...” J replied, glancing down to his brother, who had begun to drool a bit in his sleep. “The kid’s right.” Hughes spoke. “This guy is 100% dangerous to everyone on the streets, and everyone behind closed doors...that’s why the next time we meet, there will be no talking, or explanations.” “Right. The next time we see him, we’ll kill him.” Ryan finished.
“Anyway, on a less serious note, what are you guys going to do now? Between the both of you, you only have three functioning arms and legs.” The Colonel joked, making the wolf sigh. “Well, I have to get a new arm, and Axel needs to let his foot heal so...maybe we’ll take a couple days and go rest out in Resembool.” J said, a small smile spreading across his maw. “Well, if you’re going to be traveling that far, you’ll need an escort. But not me, I’m too busy with work here.” Ryan said. “And I have to babysit the Colonel, so I can’t take you guys either.” Riza added on, making Ryan blush a bit. “If I take you, I don’t think I’d be of any help if you got attacked again...” Hughes said, making all of the Colonel’s men nod in agreement. “B-but that only leaves--” J began to say, until he was lifted off the ground and rushed through the hallways. “Alright! To the train station!!” Kawaii shouted enthusiastically, running full speed to the dorms to pack.
After quickly packing their belongings, the three furs rushed out to the train station, narrowly boarding the 7:30 to Resembool. Their train rode non-stop all through the night and through the next morning, stopping in the mid-afternoon of the next day to refuel in a small town. While the train refueled, Kawaii was absentmindedly staring out the window, while next to him, J was reading, and Axel was scribbling something in a notebook. The foxcoon was extremely bored, and was probably about to fall asleep, until he noticed a canine man with dark, slightly shaggy fur with distinct white streaks in it walk by, causing his eyes to go wide in shock. “Hey!! Aren’t you Doctor Marcoh?! It’s me, Kawaii Armstrong, from Central!” The foxcoon shouted, lowering the window. The canine spun around and glanced at the red military fur, and with a look of terror, turned tail and ran away as fast as he could.
“Hey Major Kawaii, who was that guy?” Axel asked, looking up from his notebook. “That guy’s a former State Alchemist, who specialized in medical alchemy. However, he mysteriously disappeared after the Ishvalan Civil War.” Kawaii replied, making J spring up from his seat. “If that guy specializes in medical alchemy, then maybe he known about biological alchemy too! C’mon guys, let’s get off here!” The wolf said, quickly grabbing his suitcase. The foxcoon picked up the small cub in one arm, then grabbed his own luggage and the three deboarded the train. The trio walked around the small town a bit, and with the help of some locals, eventually came upon a small, stone house overlooking a small pond. “Well, this is the place.” Axel said, while J knocked on the door a few times. “Hello? Doctor Marcoh? Are you in here?” the wolf asked, while the door opened slightly, just enough for the barrel of a gun to peek out and align itself with J’s head.
The wolf jumped out of the way just before the gun fired, falling to the ground in shock as he looked up at the smoking pistol barrel. “Big bwo, are you okay?!” Axel yelled in worry, as J clutched his racing heart while he caught his breath. "Yeah, I'm fine..." J gasped. "He missed, but only by a hair." Axel turned his attention back to the canine who stood trembling in the doorway with the gun in his paws. "Why you...how dare you try to hurt my big bwo!!" The tiger 'rawred', as he clapped his paws together and grabbed Kawaii's metal wristband. In a flash of green light and sparks, the wristband transformed into a sharp kunai knife, which Axel threw at the canine's head with pinpoint accuracy. This time, it was Marcoh who fell to the ground in a panic, as the knife cut through the air above him and impaled itself into the wall on the other side of the room.
"That...was dangerous...why'd you do that?!" Marcoh whined. "It was just as dangerous as what you did to me!!" J snapped in reply, his tail stuck upright from fury. "And what do you mean why'd you do that?! You tried to shoot me in the face!!" "That was because you're going to steal my research! But that's still no reason to use an injured baby to try and kill me!" The canine replied, causing the cub in question to spring out of his carrier's arms and bring his cast foot crashing down on Marcoh's head. "Who the hell d'ya think you're calling a baby?!!" Axel yelled, while the canine rolled on the floor in pain. "Augh, you made me bite my tongue!!" He shouted, while the tiger blew him a raspberry and J began to scold his brother's recklessness. The three furs' argument continued for a few minutes, quickly growing louder and louder until each one of them was shouting over the other two. "ENOUGH!!! QUIET DOWN!!!" Kawaii shouted as his patience ran out, silencing the other three furs instantly. "Now that I've got your attention, here's what we're gonna do. We're all gonna go sit down, and calmly talk to each other, got it?" The foxcoon said sternly. "Yep." J quickly replied. "Got it." Marcoh agreed. Axel, on the other paw, looked at Kawaii and pointed to the canine. "Why are you mad at us? He's the one who started it!" The tiger said, earning him a glare from the foxcoon that sent shivers down his spine and a warmth through his pants...
"So, you're a medical alchemist?" J asked, as he pinned a new diaper on his brother. "Yes, that is my main field of study..." Marcoh replied, as J walked back into the room with his brother in his arm. "Main field? Do you study other things too?" Axel asked, tilting his head to the side. Marcoh looked at the brothers, then looked down with an expression of pain and terror, and put his paw over his forehead. "Thirteen years ago, during that horrific war, the military needed a way to make their 'weapons' stronger...so they had me make it..." The canine trembled, his voice shaky and full of sorrow. "...what was it that they forced you to make?" J asked curiously, but cautiously. Marcoh let out a long sigh, then reached into his coat pocket and held out a small vial of crimson red liquid.
