I bet he freaked out and ran away. XD
I had a dog once do that when she didn't recognize me in my work uniform going to work on my first job. She ran up barking at me then with one sniff shut up like "Oh. It's you." Then walked away. This dog also thought statues we have in the back yard were real dogs and barked at them with the same result. LOL XD
