Saw the third "Lord of the Rings" movie for the first time recently, so eventually this happened. I'd like to do a more elaborate, original painting based on LotR eventually, but that will have to wait for the time being...

All done in Painter IX & Wacom Graphire, about 5+ hours; Soundtrack provided by Hayley Westenra. ( Which isn't exactly what I normally listen to, but it works well enough for this kind of painting. :) )
Referenced off a still from one of the movies. ( At least I think that's what it is - Maybe someone else recognizes this particular scene... ? )
LotR saga/movies and its characters © their respective owners.

Thanks! Actually, I'm still struggling with Painter IX a bit. I mean, I'm quite satisfied with this - But then, there's those crazy concept artists/ speed painters who could pull of this stuff in half the time, and quite possibly with better results. D:
Aside from the theoretical knowledge, it mainly comes down to being able to use your media/ software of choice efficiently - And with this version of Painter I'm still at the beginning of my learning experience, more or less.

Whaaaaaa! I want Painter!!!! But it's so *$@#! expensive!
But aside from that, this is a really beautiful picture, dasAoD. You are to be congratulated. It brings back my fondness for LOTR all over again. And I'm hoping that this picture represents the beginning of a couple more LOTR pictures from you. *hint hint nudge nudge*

Painter IX isn't actually that expensive any more. But I do see your point - The prices for professional GFX software, in general, can be quite obscene. :(
Anyhow, most of the techniques I used here are pretty basic, so you should be able to reproduce them in most any halfway decent graphics tool. I'm still fairly new to this version of Painter, after all, and haven't even tried the majority of the more complex features and tools yet.
And I hear what you're saying - The rediscovery of my own fondness of the LotR saga is what spawned this in first place. And I will do more paintings based on it, eventually. I just can't do anything more elaborate at this time, sadly enough, because there are just so many other things I should complete first. XD

So I did, but I enjoyed the movies anyway, even if they weren't perfect. They weren't really "bad" at all - I figure it's just a matter of people having certain expectations of how the characters or settings should look, and then they're disappointed if things aren't exactly like they imagined them when they read the books.
