This is one of my oldest pieces that's actually readable. I wrote it in February of 1988, and it was inspired by an embroidery I saw on a young East Asian woman’s blue jeans while riding the bus one day in December of 1987 or early January of 1988. The embroidery was on her upper right leg, and it stated in red and gold block letters:
Double Suicide is the Sublime Culmination of Love.
After I did a double and then a triple-take at those words, I immediately began to write a dark love song based on the idea of two people, who honestly believe that double suicide is indeed the sublime culmination of love.
I know that it’s one of the oldest tropes in literature, including its best-known iteration in Romeo and Juliet, but to be honest, I have never seen the romance in a couple deciding to chase the Reaper. This piece was my way of trying to understand that mind-set.
