please allow me to spin a little tail of how this particular formation got its name.

It was the year of 1878 A group of friends dig near where they suspect a cave has formed. After a few days of digging they finally breach a small cavern and open a hole big enough for the two smallest members of there band to enter. they both slip into the inky black light only by there small brass lanterns. excited at first, the two explorers boldness starts to wane as an hour passes and they have yet to find an end to the enter-twinging passages. Turning down yet another path one man sees an object out of the corner of his eye. turning to get a better look he sees what appears to be a faintly glowing figure down a jagged, stalagmite strewed hallway. Bring his lamp up to better illuminate this other figure is quickly blinded by a bright flash. Without looking back both men run back to whence they came believing to have seen the devil him self.

This has to be my favorite formation in Luray. called Pluto's ghost, its the largest of three Quarts columns found in the cave. the Others are called The guardians of Hades and stand on either side of the path leading to deaths thrown room where Pluto resides.
