Aptenodytes forsteri, found in Antarctica, is the tallest and heaviest of the penguin species. The males and females are similiar in size and coloration.
The Emperor Penguin uses a complex set of calls for individual recognition between parents and offspring, and mates. The call uses two frequency band simultaneously, which the chicks use to beg for food or to contact their parents.
The Emporer Penguin is being considered for placement on the Endangered Species list, with nine other species, due primarily to declining food availability.
They are social animals, and will travel and nest in groups, huddling together during severly cold weather for protection. They form a tight huddle, leaning against each other, slowly shuffling the ones on the outside towards the middle, so they all get a chance to be in the middle.
