Actually the reverse. He's a rotten, spiteful and brutal person who just constantly lies to himself, stroking his ego and telling himself he's good deep down and everything he's done is for a better cause. Now he's in a land that transforms people into an outward form that matches their heart, and now... well, now he can't lie to himself anymore and has to face some ugly reality
