FACE FRONT,O' FRANTIC ONES!
A commission for a friend of
heywulf. I was asked to recreate an actual silver age comics page in my style,so here for your pantin' perusal is my take on a swingin' Superhero from Charlton Comics-Peter Cannon, aka,"Thunderbolt"! Created by Peter Morisi in 1966,Thunderbolt was one of Charlton's "Action Heroes",along with the likes of the Blue Beetle,Captain Atom,E-Man,and the Question-all of whom were revived in the early 1980's by DC ,who had acquired the rights to the Charlton Heroes.
This was a really fun commission for me. A chance for me to pay homage to the comic book heroes I grew up with in a more innocent, less cynical time, and a source of pride as Charlton Comics was based right here in my home state of Connecticut. A Gentleman whom I consider a dear friend as well as a Mentor,George Wildman, was Editor-in-Chief of Charlton during the 1970's.
Here's a link to info about the character Thunderbolt: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_.....2C_Thunderbolt

And why not? Silver Age is full of lovely corny dialogue! Only problem is they tend to be a bit long winded for me to read many in one go... I hate that about me, but I can't help it. I pick up a reprint of Fantastic Four and read the first few pages and my mind starts to wander...
But I do like some of the old artwork. Some of that's great, to say they didn't have digital aids.

Cobra? Now thats funny, I ask me what the Cobra commander things, oh and of course, we soon will hear a "Yoooo Jooooe!" and see Duke crashing through the walls. XD
Great page, that surly is a Silver Age comic style and I have to say, they need to bring it back! We need another Silver or better, Golden age of comics, call it "Diamond Age" or something. We need cool story and cool heros. Thats a Job for you Rusty, you are the only man who can save the world.
Hmm, intresting comic title "The only man who can save the world!"

Thanks!....Actually that's not the COBRA from GI Joe. The original comic this was based on had a Villain named The Cobra ....and the commissioner aked me to change him to a Female, which worked out very nicely,I think! .....
hmmm...."The only man who can save the world!"....I like that! I'll have to try to tweak it for A & Q!
I loved Thunderbolt and all those other old comics, especially E-man, although I didn't think DC ever did anything actually featuring him, only Captain Atom, Punch and Judy, Blue Beetle, and the Question. He was pretty obviously written with a thought to the Energy Crisis at the time considering his adventures that I remember.
As far as the rendering of The Thunderbolt I feel it's spot on as I recognized him and the setting almost immediately. This is so great I'm tempted to post a link to it at Classic Marvel and send some traffic here to show it off. Hard to be sure what characters suffered the worst remaking after DC got them, although weren't Magnus Robot Hunter and Solarr Man of the Atom also Charlton?

Ahhh, okay, thanks for the correction. The store that sold Gold Key and Charlton around here in the next town was an old Dime Store that closed decades ago so I tend to mix those older and less prominent characters and companies up on occasion. God I miss that, it was so nice as a kid going into that store and reading them and talking Mom into buying them for me on occasion but sadly it's gone as is the branch it had in this town closed years ago.
Actually though I was refering to E-man, at least as far as not having seen him used by any company after Charlton sadly ent under.
Valiant was okay but once they started up with all the DC-style continuity reboots and things and that (unfinished?) finale limited series it really sucked the life out of the characters. Especially given that change that they did to Magnus.

I wouldn't say so....I really admire your talent as an Animator and builder and maintainer of websites!...What I was referring to was my uber-Geekness....if you aren't careful,I can talk your ear off about everything from Batman to Star Trek to Anime to old Aurora model kits!
I read about DC acquiring the Charlton heroes... and them being the basis for other "heroes" in the "Watchmen!" graphic novel. I don't know about Blue Beetle and E-man, but I think The Question was the basis for Rorschach and Captain Atom was the basis for Doctor Manhattan.
