I still see these son in service stars as flags used today but it's not all that often. :(

It is a nicer way to honor family that is serving, way better than a yellow ribbon.

I agree, the ribbon has lost a lot of meaning I think... Plus with these you can add more stars for more family members.

The 'yellow' ribbon's original meaning is of showing a fellow just released from prison that he is welcome to come back.
Not exactly a message that you'd want to send to the troops.
